Yusuf sighs, rolling onto his back. “Do I mind that he thought I would be foolish enough to abandon all reason and take up with one of the men who helped sack Al-Quds? Yes, a little. Not enough to stop from using it as a perfectly serviceable escape route.”
“No,” Nicolò says, “I mean, that you would prefer the company of other men at all.”
Yusuf blinks, bemused. He hadn’t even thought of that. “As a rule, I try not to be insulted by accusations that are true,” he says drily.

“Can I help you find something?” Nicky hears, not bothering to look up.
“I’d like to pick up something for my Nonna,” he replies.
“You must be Nicolò! I recognize your voice.”
Nicky looks up, and the most gorgeous man he has ever seen in person is smiling widely at him from behind the counter, causing deep dimples to show through the scruff of his tightly cropped beard. He has freckles dotting his sharp cheekbones and his nose, his eyes are the glossiest, shining brown, his hair is a riot of stunning dark, tight curls, and all Nicky can do is stare at him and think OH.

On the first day of his summer break, Nicky gets a dreaded phone call about his beloved Nonna: she’s taken a fall in her favorite bakery in Malta and broken her hip. Nicky takes a sabbatical from his job as a professor and heads to Valletta to help with her recovery. He goes to the bakery to thank the owner, Joe, for helping his Nonna and finds himself instantly drawn to the man. The feeling is mutual, but both of them agree that since Nicky will only be in town for six months, it would be best if they kept things casual. Summary
He wonders what the classrooms of the normal kids look like, wonders if there are posters up, if there are desks and toys for them to play with. There are two desks in this room, for him and Emily. There’s no posters up to look at. There’s a teddy bear in the corner that is there specifically for Emily to grasp when she has an episode. He knows Emily has a good family because they always drop her off and give her a kiss on each cheek despite her squirming away from touch. Every morning he touches his own lips and then to his cheeks and whispers to himself to pretend he has parents, too, who care for him.
Sebastien is just one of many kids stuck in the foster system in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. He dreamed of meeting his parents like every other child that was abandoned as an infant. Nothing changed all that much in his foster placement, just the different ways to be made afraid. Nile's been with them so little time and Joe is overwhelmed by how much he loves her. It feels much like he remembers it felt when his wife had first brought him their child so many lifetimes ago: a figment of his imagination suddenly real, alive and precious. She makes him feel ancient. He doesn’t remember twenty-six anymore than he remembers infancy. He’d been married by then, his children walking and talking. But twenty-six or not, it’s those children Joe thinks of when he looks at Nile.

In which Joe has a lot of feelings about families, and his family in particular.That's it, that's the fic. I think my first headcanon in this fandom was that Nicky had been a good priest, followed almost immediately by the headcanon that Joe had been a good Dad. Which got me thinking about what Nile joining the team might mean to Joe in particular.
