"You have the manner of one who is accustomed to being hungry," Hannibal observed.

Will gave an awkward half-shrug, one shoulder higher than the other. "We were poor. I was hungry a lot."

    Bookmarker's Notes

heavy, dense, and intense af, damn! sooo much emotion, introspection, sensuous poetry, and omnipresent empathy for loneliness, shame, self-hatred, the will to self-destruct, etc.

    Summary

“Soulmates, hm?” Song Lan muses. He sips at his tea, savors the slight taste of osmanthus and honey on his tongue. People talked about it at the temple sometimes, mostly girls. The red thread of fate that bound you to your soulmate, invisible except to a few gifted souls. No one at the temple had ever been able to see them, so to Song Lan, the story has always been just that - a story, and nothing more. “Do you believe in such a thing?”

“Of course,” Xiao Xingchen says, like it is the most obvious thing in the world. He smiles. ”Don’t you?”

rewinds to before the Baixue massacre catalyst! Also, situates the Songxiao relationship within the political context of the broader cultivation world, where their saved relationship also has plot consequences that are carefully considered here. most vivid and believably immersive (so much detail!) fix-it for the Yi Cheng arc, hands down

    Bookmarker's Notes

the most poetic Songxiao fic I've found so far, reads with a lot of awareness on how tragedies/disfigurements created by the aftermath of a regretted breakup persist even after eventual reconciliation and fundamentally require a restoration of trust, instead of just a logistical rewind in time to erase the external factors/events that exacerbated the consequences of mistakes made during the breakup...really like how it interprets the Yi Cheng story as the most poetic (and thus tragic) expression of a mistakenly ended relationship whose attempted reconciliation ended in mutual disaster due as much to both parties' character weaknesses as to bad luck and external villainy! I'm starry-eyed over this <3
