    Summary

Charles Xavier has returned from the dead -- but is lost within his own mind. Rogue has cast aside her own power and doesn't know where she fits in the world any longer. The production of synthetic Cure means mutantkind itself is newly at risk. And Magneto, turned human against his will, is in despair until the day he feels a familiar consciousness tugging at his own --

Set after X-3 (with much desperate fix-it applied), during XMFC, and every time in between.

Written for the following prompt: Charles knows everything about Erik, knows how obsessive and self-destructive he is, how Erik would do anything, give anything, in his quest for vengeance against Shaw. But he also knows that Erik loves him in ways that aren't exactly platonic.

I'd like to see a completely straight!Charles, out of pure love and care of Erik, initiate a romantic relationship with him. It can be because he wishes to give Erik something positive in his life or because he thinks it might help change Erik's mind about Shaw, the reason is up to author. Also, while Charles finds intimacy with Erik strange and awkward, he does enjoy the new, non-romantic layers that have developed in their relationship.

The merchant, Gnaeus, who had sold Marcus this property, had spoken of a solid main building, of well-kept pens and fertile soil, all newly abandoned by deceitful tenants and only cheap because he was tired of the whole business and wanted the land off his hands for good. He had talked of neighbours and a village nearby with opportunities of trade, but he had entirely failed to mention that the house lay deep in tribal country.

Brian talks to cars, and cars talk back. The Charger and the Supra of the first film (this is set between five and six) are given perfect voices, and I really love the author's characterisation of both American muscle cars and of imports. It sounds like crackfic, but there's a fascinating depth to this story.

It'd be very easy to make Mrs Ahab the heroine of this piece, but like all the best characters Mrs Ahab too has her flaws, and for her not her whale but her husband is the chimera she follows. Darkly comic.

Klaus believes in things he can touch, not superstitions and mountain spirits. He doesn't see any problem in cutting across a sacred mountain to surprise the enemy.

But the spirits are more real than he thinks. Now he has to decide whether to risk bringing their curse down on Taki, or abandon Taki and let it run its course - though he can't see any way he's getting out of that alive.

The dialect is stunning. I've no idea how accurate it is (although I suspect, very) but the rhythm of speech, the language, is gorgeous, and the sense of place startlingly rich in this story. It's melded seemlessly with a zombie apocalypse which is just one more day-to-day hazard.

I oved both the rhythm of the language of this story, and the inevitable sorrows, so sweetly and sadly delineated. In particular, the normalisation of transformation - animal to human - and also the sense of both time and magic passing.
