That's when he hears her ragged breathing, and he sees her, clothes torn and skin bloody, lying on his bedroom floor.
All pretense dropped, he runs to her, kneeling next to her prone form. Her hair is falling out of her usual three buns, it’s dirty, and a little matted. He doesn't even attempt to stop himself from pushing it out of her face.
"Where are you?" he whispers.
Her head lolls a bit as her eyes open. She smiles up at him.
"I knew you'd come." Her face goes sad again. "But you're not real." Tears come now. She's delirious. "I didn't want to die alone."
A year into their superhero careers, Ladybug and Chat Noir are struggling. Hawkmoth's supervillains are becoming ever more powerful and monstrous. Paris is terrorized on an almost daily basis. Worst of all, Adrien remains oblivious to the affections of his classmate, Marinette.
Desperate for any edge in the fight against Hawkmoth, they pull out the mysterious spellbook in Master Fu's possession and perform an ancient ritual within.
Unknown to them, this starts them on the path to discovering the secrets of the miraculous.
Marinette is thrilled. She's spending her afternoon at the museum with Adrien, and even Manon's unexpectedly tagging along with them can't tarnish her happiness.
After all, what can go wrong for two seventeen-year-olds watching over a seven-year-old?
Turns out, a lot of things.

“Lucky Charm!” Ladybug yelled.
“Nothing? It didn’t even give me an item!” Ladybug cried.
“I told you, Ladybug.” Mirror Master called from nowhere. “There is no escape. You are going to change back before long, and when that happens, I will be here to take your miraculouses for Hawk Moth.”
Both of the heroes’ miraculouses sound, indicating an impending detransformation.
“She’s right. There is nothing we can do!” Ladybug whispers, “and soon she’ll know our identities too.” Ladybug slides to the floor defeated. Chat sits next to Ladybug, putting his arm around her. They sat like that until with a final beep and a twinkle, the both changed back.
