The court has plans for Will's future.
So does Hannibal, the king's much favoured new servant.
Sequel to "Ornaments of Gold"
For now, there are sartorial tableaux to be arranged. Hannibal retrieves the suits one by one: all single-breasted, all tapered at the waist, with unstructured shoulders. Unmistakably Italian and ideal for a certain type of build: slim, made to move quickly, with dangerous grace.
The days are long. The summer sun is high. The meadows are heavy with poppies in bloom.
When he was still a fawn, the elder-stags told Will many stories about what midsummer magic could do.
If the stories are true, then Will has to make the magic happen — for Hanni.
Written for the #WillInTheWoods challenge. Based on Camille's Hannistag AU.
Venice, 1870. The heart of winter. The once great city republic is on its knees. The banned institution of Carnevale lives on discreetly in the masked balls that light up the grand palazzi of the rich and the well-born.
Mr Will Graham, detective, travels to Venice from London to give a lecture on the Hobbs case. His desire to remain in the city only briefly is soon scuppered by matters both bloody and sentimental.
