Those years ago, in Slughorn’s class, she had been told to smell the Amortentia like all the other students. And her embarrassment had been so intense that she had lied. “Freshly mown grass and new parchment,” she had said. This was patently false.
She had smelled nothing.
Embarrassment curdled into panic. When, in the history of Potions, had anyone smelled nothing from Amortentia? How was that even possible?
She sniffed and sniffed and sniffed, nearly hyperventilating, but still, nothing. In a fit of desperation, she yanked back her humid curls with her hands and bodily leaned over the fumes rising from the cauldron. Her face burned from the heat, and she could hear the laughter of Malfoy behind her, insisting loudly that “she must have realised this is the only way to smell the bloke she fancies because he’d never want a Mudblood like her.”
For the first time in her life, Hermione violently wished that Malfoy were right. At least then, she wouldn’t be defective.Series
