Summary
In an very much AU, canon-divergent world, Jingyun Temple raises some members of the temple as experts in dual cultivation. Boya is one of them. Whether he likes it or not, he has to fulfill certain obligations as long as he's with them. But... if he can get out, or if someone can get him out... Then that's different, isn't it. And isn't it a good thing, that the peculiar person from the Yin-Yang Temple that he ran into is both kind and easy on the eyes...
Qingming didn't mind being more familiar with his mother's kin in the North than with the humans that Master Zhongxing also taught at the Yin-Yang Temple. He didn't mind being sent as the Temple's representative for the Serpent battle. He definitely didn't mind the handsome Jingyun cultivator asking to be around him. If only the reason he'd asked to do so wasn't so terrible...

Inspired by some speculative discussions in Discord over what an even darker Fox's Pet verse might look like, in parts.
What if things were worse? What if... what if Qingming lost Boya, and couldn't find him, over and over again. What if some long centuries before what was seen in canon, some of the cultivational schools or temples took a turn for the worse? To the point where growing strong enough to do some of the things a spirit or demon might do would be... unwise. To the point where being given that strength is no blessing in disguise. Even, perhaps, leading to a fate arguably worse than death...

Summary
