“You… got me a dog?” Ryan looks more confused than displeased, which Shane counts as a win in his favor.

“Yep,” he answers, popping the ‘p’ and grinning as Ryan’s face scrunches up in annoyance. “You’ve been saying that you wanted one and she kind of… fell into my lap, so. Felt like a sign.”

Ryan laughs. “A sign, huh?” He’s playing at nonchalance but Shane can tell he’s curious now. “What does she look like?”

Shane bites his lip, recalling the red-eyes he’d had to magic away and the mouthful of teeth that would only grow sharper as she grew older. “She’s a little angel, Ry,” he fibs.

“So you really believe it?” Shane asks, the curiosity of his voice balancing with the intensity of the question. “All the ghost stories and conspiracy theories?”

“There’s a lot out there,” Ryan shrugs. He pointedly ignores the spirits whispering in his ear and doesn’t count the shadows swarming the corners of the restaurant. “Who am I to limit it?”

    Summary

In hindsight, Shane is too old to have thought that friends with benefits was something that the two of them would be able to pull off. He’s had friends with benefits before that worked beautifully, but they were not with people whose jobs were tied up in his own, whose friendships were as closely interwoven into Shane’s everyday life as Ryan’s is. He’d thought these were the very things that could keep it from getting weird, because they were such good buddies, Ryan would be solidly cemented as his pal that nothing could shift him.

This was a miscalculation, on Shane’s part.

OR: Lots of friends sleep together casually without it getting weird. Surely Ryan and Shane can, too.

    Summary

In the wake of his latest breakup, Ryan begins to realize that his closest friends might just be what he’s been looking for. But first he has to accept that he wants both Shane and Sara, and that they want him back.

Ryan puts his hand on her back, his last two fingers overlapping with Shane’s, and Sara plants a loud, exaggerated kiss on the top of his head. She keeps her arms around them, elbows hooked behind each of their necks, holding them what should be uncomfortably close. But Ryan just feels warm.

He’s content not to move, uncaring of the sight they must make, standing ankle-deep in the sand, huddled up together, with this tiny girl holding them both in a headlock. Closing his eyes, for a moment, Ryan just breathes.

For the first time, he’s not thinking of all the ways that this thing taking shape between them could go wrong.
