it has taken me FOREVER to read this series all the way through, despite the fact that it's basically everything I'm into. I love all the individual pieces, but something about the way everything fits together (the objectification, the stone stuff, the casual discussion of trauma, the way they interact with each other) is TOO MUCH and reached through the screen like samara and SMACKED ME. (and not even in an erotic way!) it's just, somehow all the ACTUAL things I'm into, not the things I'm "into" (by which I mean, into reading about, which isn't the same—trashfic tends to be in the latter category, but objectification [in a literal sense] is the former), anyway, it's just a lot and reading this is a lot and ~ipseity~ is complicated sometimes! I'm so [fiona apple - extraordinary machine 10 hours] right now, it's embarrassing.

actually it's kind of funny, most of what happens in this story is pretty tame compared to a lot of the stuff I've read (trashmeme is wild yo) but it still feels incredibly heavy, because of the psychological aspect, which is of course the ideal. there's a part in the first story where bucky describes a fantasy he's had about steve using him as a literal punching bag—that was the moment where I first was like oh, yes please, I like this—that is single-handedly better than 90 per cent of the fics I've read. also, HOW PERFECT IS THE STONE STUFF? SO PERFECT. the fact that it's never really commented on, it's just understood and tacitly accepted that it's not an option, is REALLY GOOD. basically, the ideal how-to-be-a-person fic. gold star. in fact, take two. I'll fork over the pleiades or something.

    Summary

The higher-ups call it Operation Watchtower, but to Bucky Barnes and the rest of the men on the ground, it's Operation Pestilence. Bucky doesn't mind that much. He was the one stupid enough to enlist, after all, alongside a bunch of other guys stupid enough to enlist. It's their own damn fault they're sitting in muddy holes in the ground getting malaria and eating whatever they can steal from the dwindling Japanese food caches.

Sometimes Bucky crunches his way through a tin of fish heads and gazes out at the sea, wondering if the US Army's forgotten them there on Guadalcanal, wondering if there's a US Army or a Navy even left to remember them or if the Japanese have won and nobody's bothered to let the GIs know. Then he decides fuck it and chucks his tin of fish heads at Foghorn because he's in the mood to wrestle and Foghorn's always up for a fight. They both come out of it laughing and a little bloody and feeling better because, hell, Bucky figured out pretty quick that living or dying is largely just a matter of chance, so why worry?

so first of all I'm a sucker for period pieces in this fandom, especially those with STUNNING HISTORICAL ACCURACY AND EVIDENT EFFORT PUT INTO RESEARCH, so really, it wasn't a surprise when I realized that I absolutely love this. there are a lot of things that this story feels like, to me, and I can't describe all of them, but here's a basic summary: it feels like a razor blade inside a candy bar; it feels like mistaking a copperhead for a corn snake; it feels like not realizing there's a spider in your shoe until you've already put it on. it feels like chasing a rabid dog. I love this bucky so much, and I love his interactions with the other characters; the whole story captures the destructive-destroying-hollow feeling of war perfectly. very the things they carried. very that one paragraph from tom stoppard's arcadia. it's a war story, darling. and it really does feel like the literary representation of keep calm and carry on, by which I mean, you drag yourself one-handed out of the pit and pretend it isn't hurting. and no one is coming to save you. it's just you. the writing style is sharp and almost brittle—you can feel how at-the-end-of-the-rope bucky is, how little he values his life (and how much he wishes he valued it more). the tangible sting of displacement—one's own personal diasporic detachment—comes across beautifully. it sounds bad to say I enjoy the story all the more for that, but sorry, bucky, you're just so pretty when you're suffering.
