Summary
Kyo lidded the pot. He didn’t move, and neither did Yuki. Though words sat on the back of Yuki’s tongue, a petty and offhand means of saying I didn’t know you bothered listening to me, the moment had passed, and they stood muted as they allowed the low sounds of simmering to speak for them instead.
And this was where Yuki expected it to end. It happened every time. The stretch of silence would last for too long, and, after making motions to speak but never actually carrying through, one or both of them would end up leaving the room in pursuit of air more breathable and less fringed with things unsaid and unknown.
And every time, Yuki realized the catch: this didn’t happen with anyone else.

“So you’re not dating, then?”
“Hah, no. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, Yun, but she’s not exactly the dating type. Not for the long-term and definitely not for what us lowly casuals call love. I’m surprised I started today with money still left in my wallet.”
“I just didn’t think you were interested in hookups,” Yuki says. “That’s all.”
“Well, maybe I wouldn’t be if you would just let me date you, but your high standards have left me no choice, Yun-Yun.” Kakeru lolls his head back, an exaggerated sigh leaving him and hitting the ceiling of the café, and lets his arms hang limp at his sides as though allowing his soul to give up. It puts the hickey on his lower neck more obviously on display. “If I can’t be with a princess, then I’ll just have to settle for a girl who thinks she is one.”

Kakeru, Kimi, and Yuki hook up during their second year of college. It seemed like a good idea at the start.

“Was that too much?”
“What?”
Kakeru jutted his chin at Yuki’s shoulder. Looked at it, and then to Yuki. That.
Yuki squeezed his elbow and let go.
“...It’s fine,” he managed, but the way Kakeru’s brow quirked made him double-back and ask, “What was that all about?”
His friend shrugged. A non-committal I dunno sat in his throat.
“Felt like it,” he said. Then, he raised a hand and brushed the offending kiss from Yuki’s shoulder, swiping the spot over twice as if trying to get rid of a stray fuzz, or a bug. Yuki watched his hand, perplexed, until Kakeru returned it again to his phone. “But then you looked like I shot you or something.”

“Look. I know you’re trying not to make this a big deal, and like hell I’m gonna inhibit your newfound taste for adventure, but this doesn’t seem like that. I mean, let’s be real, your sense of adventure usually ends up with something blowing up in the microwave or like, going to the convenience store drunk at three a.m. You know? Just… I dunno. All I know is that this isn’t normal, and you’re actually kind of starting to freak me out.”
Yuki shifted his toe into the gravel. He chewed the inside of his lip, trying to suppress the thing collapsing behind his sternum at his horrible honesty.
“So can you just do me a solid and stay with them for the night? Like, I get it, it’s awkward or whatever, it’s not really your ‘thing’ to drop by like that. But I’d rather you be awkward and with people we know than fucked up and alone for the next few hours.”
“I’m not fucked up,” Yuki mumbled.
“Yun,” Kakeru said, and the edge in the way he said it made an anxious chill shoot down Yuki’s arms. “C’mon.”

Yuki ends up at the ocean. He ends up at Kyo and Tohru's house. He doesn't know why; none of this was exactly planned.

Summary
“Is it such a crime to talk about my best friend?” he volleyed. She clicked her tongue.
“Quit getting so defensive, geez. I’m just… hm.”
Kakeru didn’t like that hm. Something teetered in him as she fell into an odd bout of silence, as though she were trying to find her words. And she only ever did that when she was trying to get him to talk feelings.
As a rule, they didn’t talk feelings. Mostly because she was crap at it and it always made him want to crawl out of his skin and inhabit some other abandoned bag of flesh to inherit a new name and person.
“Kakeru,” she started, and she said his name slow like she was trying to warn him that there was a bear nearby. “All I’m trying to say is that if you have anything you want to tell me, you… can. That’s all.”
And there his bones went, slithering away from him.

Kakeru had always told himself he doesn't care what his mom thinks.
