Summary
Of course Rosemary knew who Pansy was. Few people didn’t. She regarded her guest with renewed interest. Chade hadn’t mentioned Lady Patience would bring along such an interesting character! Though she supposed he wouldn’t. For a folk hero, Pansy was relatively modestly dressed. Her tunic of a dress was a plain dark green with dark flowers of patterns surrounding some stylishly placed buttons and a slit to the side that likely hid an underskirt. Rosemary would’ve taken it for one of those Jamaillian fashions if it weren’t so plain. This sort of meeting held a risk, naturally, with Pansy presenting her with accusations of spying a mere few words after meeting her, but Rosemary was sure of her ability to act the part of a flighty, impressed court lady.
“Oh my. If I knew I was inviting in someone so famous, I would’ve made more of a production of it.” It was difficult to curtsy in such close quarters, but somehow, she managed. “Lady Rosemary, at your service.”
“And what would you be serving me for?” Pansy asked with dry amusement.
Rosemary answered without missing a beat, “I’m sure we can think of something.”

"You've always been a researcher. Jonqui's always thought it's a shame you're more interested in history than in plants, otherwise she might’ve made you her successor."
"...I didn't know she thought of me so highly. Thanks for telling me, Ket."
"Of course. So, does that mean you want to learn from her after all?"
"Learn, certainly. But I don't crave her position. That is not my fate."
"...that is a strange way to say it, but I suppose we all have something we are fated to be."
"Yes, it's not just you Sacrifices."

Summary
“Do you know how many others have been in this room, Dwalia?” the girl said conversationally, settling on a leather chair at the other end of the round table, drumming her fingers against the map without a care.
Dwalia stayed silent too long - the girl continued without waiting for a reply, a sliver of a smile playing on her face. “Only four people, aside from the two of us.”
The importance of the words was not lost on Dwalia. She felt hot and cold all at once and couldn’t tell if her skin flushed or paled as she realised that only the very highest-ranking Servants knew this room. Who was this girl who had met the Council of Four personally and yet joined simple learners during their schooling, whose very presence had seemed to mock Dwalia and who had still chosen her out of dozens to bring into this room?
“It is a great honor,” Dwalia spoke gravely, desperately thinking of the appropriate way to address her host, “Oh Ivory Path-leader.”
The girl laughed, a sound as pearly and dangerous as a predator’s open jaws. “You certainly know how to change your tune, oh two-faced Dwalia the Double-Tongue.”

Summary
War was never kind to messengers. Or business. Or anyone at all.
But Ronica was not setting it up a gravestone. She was honoring a treasured gift from a treasured friend. Lady Patience shared her sense of practicality in a manner of ways, but she never had grown out of her eccentricities, so her gifts were always both useful and surprising. Just like a plant that grew only in the Duchies but was said to relief pain when nothing else helped.

Summary
“I’ve, um, been dreaming.” She closes her eyes because it’s easier to ignore Mami and Homura’s stares. “In, in my dream I’m still in bed, but I-I’m not alone, Sayaka’s next to me but she’s not breathing, she’s—”
She’s pale and cold and pretty in the same way the stained glass windows of Kyoko’s father’s church are pretty and she’s lying so still she can’t be anything but dead. But in her dream Kyoko still curls around her, soul gem in hand, keeping her warm, keeping her safe—
“—she’s dead, I didn’t even know her that well and she’s dead and in my dream I’m so, I’m scared that there’s nothing I can do.” She opens her eyes. “But there really is nothing I can do. She’s already gone, and we left her there.” She stares hard at her hands. “We weren’t really even friends.”

Summary
For lack of anything else to distract Malta from the horrible monotony of waiting to die, she turned her head to look at Kekki. The woman’s eyes were half-closed and empty, her fine features twisted with fatigue. Her lips were chapped and bleeding, so red from the acid it almost looked like she was wearing makeup. Malta would have laughed at that, if she could laugh. Kekki’s face looked terrible, and her fine gown was shredded and dirty.
Malta decided she liked her better that way.
