TODO: explain my opinions of the series. I just started book 7 of 8.

I remember some passages that could have been edited out. Most prominently was the description of the room of Malfoy Manor that Iruka woke up in. He was eventually transported out of that room without the multiple paragraphs of set dressing being relevant.

An interesting what-if. A few of the flashbacks felt redundant. The resolution made sense but was not what I was hoping for.

Death isn't good for the soul and dead things can't die twice.

Harry dies too many times to be fine. After the war he goes travelling; he and Tom Riddle always were too much alike for their own good.

Interesting and well-told but depressing and with less resolution than I hoped for.

When Petunia had to allow her hated nephew into her home, she'd expected troubles to arise sooner or later. Nothing though could have prepared her for the reality of what was to come. The boy sleeping under her roof, eating her food, wasting her money, was no normal child, oh no. It was an evil little demon hiding beneath innocent features. My take on sociopath!Harry.

Though it’s short and ends before introducing the Wizarding World, it’s an interesting look at an unusual personality and how much and little difference it makes in Petunia’s relationship with Harry.

Harry Potter has no idea what to do. His new Auror recruits are nothing short of hopeless. Then an idea hits him...
"So, let me get this straight: we're supposed to show some wand-waving weirdos how to do our job?"
"Yes, that is the general idea."

Or: failing Auror recruits get dumped with MI-5 to get a lesson in how spying is really done, and with cooperating magical and Muggle terrorists on the loose, working together might just be a necessity anyway.

Set in Spooks season 5 and after the Deathly Hallows, but before the epilogue of Harry Potter

A competent drama. The story described the characters and events competently and had plenty of twists. However, it felt a little cliché, particularly in the last few chapters.

The mashup of Harry Potter and the British Secret Service seemed original. However, I’ve never seen the show Spooks (MI-5), so I couldn’t fully relate to all the characters.

I was a bit disappointed in the way the whole wizarding world, including Harry Potter, was depicted as incompetent at investigation. I’ve seen dramatic stories about a competent Auror Harry that felt truer to his character. This depiction isn’t wrong, per se, just not as interesting as it could be.

I also wished to understand the individual villains more before confronting them. Their goals were nebulous at first, which was fine for raising the tension of the good guys’ investigation, but the group was dealt with too soon after their goals were revealed for the group to feel like a threat. I wish the group had a more threatening plan for getting their way.

It threw me off that the story breezed past the raid going well and managing its goals of stopping the perpetrators. The story did have plenty of drama related to the raid, but I still wasn’t sold that the raid would succeed at all. I wanted to see the bad guys react to the knowledge that they were attacked and put up some prepared defense that the good guys had to take down to get at them.
