In a world where Neville is the Boy-Who-Lived, Harry still grows up with the Dursleys, but he learns to be more private about what matters to him. When McGonagall comes to give him his letter, she also unwittingly gives Harry both a new quest and a new passion: Transfiguration. But while Harry deliberately hides his growing skills, Minerva worries more and more about the mysterious, brilliant student writing to her who may be venturing into dangerous magical territory.

Another great story from Lomonaaeren, and it’s not even slash this time.

Harry could be called OP in this story. But since we always see how much Harry suffered before getting to where he did, I don’t really mind.

The world-building about transfiguration magic and specific Dark spells is great. The transfiguration spells and animal philosophy were creative. And all the characters seem their own people, with their own goals. Dumbledore is less sympathetic than in most stories, but still quite understandable. Snape’s thinking is different from usual too, but also very understandable. And the surprisingly easy way those characters’ problems are resolved gives greater insight into not just Harry’s character, but others’ from seeing their reactions.

It was a hoot to see a Voldemort who I didn’t have to fear when he appeared in the scene, yet who was still scary enough to count as a villain who must be dealt with.

Some scenes from an alternate version of Disney's Aladdin.

What if people were good at wishing? The Genie's rules have holes you could drive a herd of camels through, but they don't have to. Aladdin and Jafar's wishes are shallow and limited, and lack the foresight that really effective wishing entails, but wouldn't a battle between effective wishers be much more interesting? And while we're at it, why does Jasmine have so little agency and basically act as a prize to be won in a battle between two men when literally the entire point of her narrative is that she's not that?

Not exactly a complete fanfic, but enough of one that if you've seen the movie you can probably fill in the gaps yourself.

Contains normative advice on the use and binding of Genies.

Science fiction loosely based on the Qeng Ho from Vernor Vinge's "A Deepness in the Sky", about the question of what it's like to work on a ten thousand year old legacy code base.

Mostly slice of life from the perspective of a programmer aboard an interstellar trading ship with little over-arching plot (though that may change over time).

This is a mirror with the canonical version living on my blog, but it's probably much easier to read the archives here.

Interesting exploration of a human’s views in the Daevinity Glowfic setting, and the conundrums one would face there. But the ending is sad because it brings the main character’s journey to a dead end.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This story has some problems with believability, but also has much to recommend it. Despite the problems, it was still usually an engaging read, and I look forward to the next installment (currently only 33 chapters are published).

The worldbuilding around what is possible with magic, and what a magical world with more sensible institutions would like, is quite interesting. This includes the better Quidditch rules in chapter 22, Harry’s phobia, and the Fidelius shenanigans.

The plot developments are also surprising and clever. The political maneuverings show depth. And I like the glimpses of the darker, rarely-written-about sides of the wizarding world such as the whorehouse and the lustful ghost.

The building of the harem is a bit unbelievable, especially in how it starts. How did Harry convince Hermione’s parents to let him tutor her in math behind closed doors for so much time? Why do all these girls like him so much after merely spending time with him, and why are they so happy about him being their “lord” in some cases? Culture could explain some cases and individual personalities could explain others, but there are too many girls for that to be a believable explanation for all of them.

However, the characters in the harem are all different enough, and eventually have enough interesting stories of their own, that I can forgive these mistakes and still enjoy the story, though the flimsy premise is always in the back of my mind reminding me that it could have been greater.

Another disappointing element of the story is that the AU elements are not very clear, though that hasn’t been as much of a problem in later chapters. Magical institutions were arbitrarily upgraded just to make them cooler, but only as a side note, which means I can’t predict when one of those differences could affect the plot. Albus being relatively evil is also cliché given that it isn’t the main premise of the story, though a partial explanation has been hinted at that at least ties his actions to one of the original magics of the story, so it’s mostly but not completely out-of-the-blue.

A somewhat interesting account of fictional software testing. However, since I haven’t watched the show, most of the humorous references fly over my head. And I was disappointed that I didn’t get to read Sam’s reaction to the diary – not know who Sam is, I don’t understand why she would hate what it says.

This story has some nice fluffy romance. There were some good explanations of dating and genders. But some plot inconsistencies were never addressed, such as two things at the end of the first chapter – Naruto supposedly loving Kakashi from the start, though we see she doesn’t actually, and Kurama talking to Naruto that young. There was also something else about the writing that I didn’t like, though I can’t remember now – maybe too much irrelevant filler?

It's droll and tacky of me to inflict yet another 'Naruto has a twin' story upon an unsuspecting world, but I did it anyway. Clearly, I'm an uncontrollable monster, and no one should pay any attention to me.

This ninja business? It isn't for the faint of heart. Luckily Aiko is far from faint, even if she did get stuck with a ridiculously girly name.

Definitely an OC story. A SI story depending on your definition-- her knowledge of Naruto as well as other modern things matches mine when I started the story, so I had some sort of basis for her advantages instead of doing research to give her things that would be convenient. (a la, Sure she's a chemist! Why not? She was a martial artist too, and she can build a better camera. There's none of that.). You won't ever see references to her first life: no name, family, or death. Of course, that lack of background comes with its own problems.

This is largely the same version as what is on fanfiction.net, with the exception of materials from about chapter 70 or so on that start arcs that are noncompliant with their guidelines or lead up to those situations.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Though this story is really long and doesn’t resolve everything (there’s a sequel), I liked it. The psychology-backed behaviors of characters was interesting, no matter that I don’t know whether it’s accurate. The main character Aiko had some interesting thoughts on the world of Naruto, too. There are more ass-kicking fights than tense fights, but the balance is close enough to make me wonder about most fights. The main character doesn’t use her past-life knowledge nearly as much as she could, but some of this can be excused as her personality, and it’s still a good story despite that. The world has a lot of details that educates what goes into a world and makes the world feel real.

Obito’s characterization and thoughts about himself were interesting, and the plot of fixing the future while avoiding suspicion kept me reading. Most elements of the plot were resolved, but not all – I want to know more about Orochimaru and Itachi. Also, I didn’t understand all of the characters and references to events because I haven’t watched all of canon.

The story has good characterizations of the Akatsuki, and the romance is realistic. On the negative side, the story is too vague when it time-skips, and I don’t always believe that things would stay the same for that long. While some of the foreshadowing is laughably clunky, other twists – small ones in battle and big ones about the main quest – were surprising and satisfying.

A pleasant time-travel fic. Most problems with the world are resolved, but there is enough conflict to make it interesting. Cool powers and fight scenes, plus interesting details about life in Konoha, are described. I don’t personally care for the romance, but I don’t hold it against the story.

Too often, events are described as if seen through unbelievably rose-colored glasses, and occasionally a joke is repeated multiple times. But the story was still worth reading. It held my attention through my time rereading it in January 2016, even though that was my second or third read.
