Funny and interesting. Too bad the story is probably abandoned, but what is there is still worth reading – the unfinished plot isn’t as important as the character interactions, which we did see.

After escaping from Merope in London and fleeing back to Little Hangleton, Tom Riddle had thought he was free of witches. He wasn’t expecting yet another witch to turn up on his doorstep. This one seems different, but she too smells of Amortentia. Can he trust her when she tells him that she has brought him his baby from a London orphanage?

There are only 12 chapters right now, but so far it is very creative and fun. The dramatic irony of what Hermione knows and the Riddles don’t, what the Riddles know and Hermione doesn’t, or what Riddle knows and Malfoy doesn’t and so on is at the right level – enough to make things funny without them being tragic. I am pleased that all the protagonists seem intelligent and are not merely being swept along in a Mary Sue’s wake. I also enjoy the worldbuilding of the 1920s, which is a rare setting, and of wizarding high society, which is portrayed as making much more sense to those in the culture than other fanfiction stories usually portray that society.

Apparently Chapter 4 of this story is the only page on the internet to mention “flower slang” and “flower language” together. That shows impressive originality for a short but funny, very relatable joke.

It was Mrs. Figg who suspected first.

She noticed many things, sitting on her side of her fence with her cats chasing butterflies and nuzzling her ankles, Mundungus and the other watchers dropping by for tea now and then.

Mrs. Figg noticed that Petunia was a nosy bit of work with insecurities hanging from her every harsh angle. She noticed when Dudley learned the word MINE-- the whole neighborhood noticed that one. She noticed that Vernon glared at owls.

She noticed that when Petunia gave Harry a truly horrendous haircut one year, it grew back in at a normal rate. Harry was uneven and weird-looking for ages, hiding under beanies when he could.

When Mrs. Figg had Harry over for carefully miserable afternoons of babysitting, she noticed nothing moved that shouldn't. He didn't accidentally make flowers out of fallen leaves, or levitate anything during tantrums, or turn toys funny colors.

Mrs. Figg called up her mother, interrupting the wizarding bridge game she was winning against the nursing home staff, and asked her how she had known, decades back, that her youngest daughter was a squib.

    Summary

When kids in the Slytherin Common Room tossed jeers at the pudgy feet of Millicent Bulstrode, Harry rose up to do something about it. This Harry, now one of Snape’s own, got fewer House points lost but many more detentions– it had never been the colors on his hem that Severus hated.

This was not wishing Harry an easy path. This was not wishing the boy a warm House. This was Harry, three weeks in, sleep deprived and considering running away and going back to Privet Drive. This was Harry in the back of Potions class, blank-faced under Snape’s disdain the way he’d perfected under the Dursleys’s torments.

When Quirrell shouted “troll in the dungeons, thought you ought to know,” and Harry overheard that there was a girl in the bathroom crying, he still ran off to make sure she got out okay. He hesitated first, at the back of the little pack of Slytherin first years (at the back so that no one could get behind him)– he hesitated.

And Millicent Bulstrode, who could never quite keep her tummy tucked in enough, could never brush all the cat hair off her robes, never quite keep her temper in check, hesitated, too.

I liked the depiction of how Harry’s group could form despite him being in Slytherin, and the difference with Draco’s parents and Peter. However, the plot wasn’t as different as I would have liked – I’m a fan of the butterfly effect. The post-battle ending also dragged on without much happening.

Not much plot, but interesting characterizations and descriptions of the magical world from Sherlock’s point of view. I also liked seeing Watson and Holmes’s parental struggles.

The fan-made webcomic remake linked in Chapter 1 is great, but note that it was abandoned right after the end of the first chapter. It’s still a good alternative or supplement to Chapter 1 itself. When reading it, use the chronological order view; that tag includes all story pages (as of 2019-05-19).

At 7/? chapters completed, this is a fun start. I like the pranks so far and the mixup with the blame for each prank. I hope the plot goes somewhere eventually – I’ll find out when the story is finished. I will label this a “semifavorite” now, but if it has a good plot it has potential to be a “favorite”.

In September of 1971, Severus Snape finds a forgotten portrait of the Slytherin family in a dark corner of the Slytherin Common Room. At the time, he has no idea that talking portrait will affect the rest of his life.

By December, Nizar has been free of a portrait's boundaries for a little over a month. Just in time for things to start to get interesting: he is less than impressed by Death Eaters, agrees with Sirius Black that 12 Grimmauld Place should possibly be burned to the ground, and learns a few things he'd really prefer to avoid.

Some cool twists with Nizar, foreshadowed good enough to justify them but not to completely give them away. And occasionally there is some cool worldbuilding.

But the author romanticizes the 900s and 1000s way too much. (This problem gets even worse in the sequel, Part 3 of Of a Linear Circle.) I don’t find it believable that everything significant was better in the old days. Nizar should recognize some wonderful new things, something more than zippers. The romance is also not to my taste, though it is not objectively bad.

This has some cool minor worldbuilding around Harry’s reception in the Wizengamot and a pureblood witch’s experience of an electronics store. However, the plot of Harry’s improvement and of his romance with Daphne felt like only an outline of a plot. Harry’s difficulties at the beginning didn’t last long enough to feel real, and we didn’t see enough of his interactions with Daphne for me to be convinced of his love. So the romance part is wishful-thinking fluff.

The story has a cool premise. Harry’s friendships with Hermione, Dudley, the Slytherins, and Anthony are developed well, as are his relationships with his relatives, and the Stone solution is unique. There was also the right amount of tension with Harry being ignorant of the common knowledge about himself – enough to make me want it resolved, but not enough for me to get frustrated.

But some decisions by the characters seem unrealistic. Not just unrealistic like “out of character”, but unrealistic like “almost no person their age would do that”. It was also a bit handwaved how Harry and Draco got through the trials so easily, though I suppose that’s better than if the story had retold canon scene-by-scene. And I wish we got to learn exactly why the Hogwarts administration did nothing after being warned about Quirrel.

I read it a few days ago, and I remember liking it. It’s funny and has good ideas for the worldbuilding, but it sometimes gets hard to keep track of the many plot points.

I don’t remember whether it warranted a Favorite tag or just Semifavorite, but I can decide that on reread when the story is finished. I’ll just mark it Semifavorite now.

Promising worldbuilding, but the plot doesn’t really go beyond canon in this book. The door’s secret was predictable, being like another story I had read, and hasn’t affected the plot yet. The story as a whole is too familiar. I do like R.A.T. for “Ridiculously Arduous Tests”, though.

This low-stress romp is an amazing realization of Ichigo and other Bleach characters in the world of Harry Potter. Harry just wants to have a quiet life and get along with everyone. He wants to be normal, and accepted. Being “normal” for the Dursleys yielded great results in improving his standard of living, and as he heads off to Hogwarts he still retains that impulse to keep his head down and blend in. Of course, life isn’t as simple as that, and Harry is a magnet for trouble. And what does "normal" really mean, anyway? I liked the backstories of the familiar characters that made you care about the characters and understand why they would join the rebellion despite this story being so short. There was also some good world-building about the actions of the rebels, the state of humanity at this time, and the chain of Gem command as Bismuth sees it. The plot is less interesting than it could be because we know how everything ends, but the character interactions are still interesting enough as they happen.
