The future. Yì City.
Wèi Wúxiàn is a street musician, scraping by on a day to day basis.
Lán Wàngjī is a world-famous gǔqín player.
When a tune brings them together, it's a fated encounter that changes both of their lives forever.
"We should play your composition together," Wèi Yīng suggests as he pulls his flute out from - underneath his shirt? Doesn't he own a flute case like any normal person?
"My composition?" Of course Lán Wàngjī has played with this idea. He has imagined it countless times since he heard Wèi Yīng play the tune at the underground station. But he would never have dared to suggest this. It's such an intimate thing to ask for.
"Yes," Wèi Yīng beams down at him and Lán Wàngjī realises he's standing much closer to him than last time and doesn't seem to have any intention to move further away. His left elbow almost brushes against the other man's legs.
"I mean this is our tune now, isn't it? We would never have met without it."
Lán Wàngjī almost faints at the idea of "our tune".

“Tangxiong!” she calls, just shy of shouting, coming up in front of them. Lan Wangji greets her back politely and he sees her curiously eyeing Wei Wuxian. Lan Ming smiles and gestures at Wei Wuxian. “Won't you introduce me to your new friend, tangxiong?”
Lan Wangji squints at her.
“We are not friends.”
or: Lan Wangji doesn't have any friends. Sure he knows almost all the people in their sect and sure he has a bunch of cousins, but he wouldn't say they were close. Said cousins beg to differ. Cue family shenanigans.
Jingyi’s made a lot of silly mistakes on night hunts before. Everyone has, even Sizhui.
But this may be the worst.
(Jingyi stares harder in hopes that the two children will suddenly regrow to their previous sizes. They do not. Jingyi keeps trying.
He whispers, “have you ever just like realized that you’re about to be literally murdered?”
“Can’t say I’ve had that particular realization, no,” Zizhen replies with the air of a born badass. Jin Ling sighs.
“Murder is wrong,” the child in black interjects wisely.
Even at age six, Senior Wei is lecturing us, Jingyi thinks hysterically.)

Wei Wuxian hates weddings. Lan Wangji feels the same. Maybe they can change each other’s opinions?
(Seriously, I suck at summaries. Basically a cute first meeting at a wedding)

"Ooh, this is fascinating." Wei Wuxian lifts his hand and—Heavens help him—Lan Wangji's hand follows. Because they're stuck. They're stuck. Their fingers are interlaced, and they can't pull them apart. "You know, I wasn't expecting this, but isn't it odd? It's obviously a curse, but so far, it's not harmful."
Oh, it is harmful, Lan Wangji thinks through a spinning head as he feels Wei Wuxian twist their hands this way and that, testing the limits of the curse. It is most certainly harmful.
A curse brings Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji together—literally.
(tl;dr a curse makes teen!wwx and teen!lwj hold hands. lwj, who is very much in denial about his feelings, tries his best not to panic and wwx decides that Operation: Make Lan Zhan My Best Friend is a GO. hilarity ensues)
