"I'm not going to die of spoiled blood," Zhou Zishu groans, "Good heavens, Lao Wen ah."

"Indeed not! I won't let you," Wen Kexing agrees, and threads the needle. They fall silent as he stitches the wound closed. He can feel Zhou Zishu's eyes on his face, but he doesn't dare look up to meet his gaze; he doesn't want to prick him by accident. No, Zhou Zishu will not die of spoiled blood.

    Summary

Wei Ying laughs shakily. "I'm glad you're behind me on this single-plank bridge. I was prepared to do it alone, you know."

"Not behind," says Lan Wangji, heart in his mouth as he dares to say it.

    "What?"

"Not behind you. Beside you. On the single-plank bridge."

Wei Ying straightens up, his lips twitching. "That makes no sense, Lan Zhan. It's a single plank, there isn't room for both of us to walk across side-by-side."

    Bookmarker's Notes

They've reached the cliff face where Lan Wangji meditates. He can hear all the other Lan members stutter to a halt as they also see what Wei Ying is looking at. It's not a large cliff face – there isn't room for all 3000 rules of Gusu Lan. But the ones that weigh on him, the ones that made him follow Wei Ying here, those he has sworn that he will not forget when they are inconvenient, those he has etched into the stone.

"A reminder for myself," says Lan Zhan. He turns and sits next to where his calligraphy reads Shoulder the weight of morality.

"I am sure you must have much to say to me, if you have come all this way."

    Summary

Wei Wuxian drops his hand, leans one shoulder into the stunted door frame. “Oh. Okay. So. Why are you here, exactly?”

“The Institute sent me to assist you,” the ridiculously beautiful cardigan owner says, “as your familiar.”

Wei Wuxian laughs as if it’s a joke, although the man’s stony expression makes it clear that any humor gleaned from him is likely unintentional.

“Well, uh, I appreciate your,” Wei Wuxian says, “you know, time, but everything is under control here, actually.”

With impeccable timing, a tea-kettle sound keens from the kitchen, followed by a contained bang.

Or: Wei Wuxian is a witch, Lan Wangji is sent to be his familiar. They figure it out.

Wei Wuxian scrubs a hand through his hair, agitated. He blows out a fast breath. “It’s just that...”

It’s just that what? That some days, it feels like Wei Wuxian swallowed a broken mirror when he was still a kid, and all those glass shards are still grinding around inside of him, and if he moves a certain way, they rip and tear and prod and set him bleeding? That sometimes the only way he can see himself is through this cracked, silver kaleidoscope of assorted pieces? Fractured, fracturing?

Ah, no, of course he doesn’t say that.

Wei Wuxian rubs his thumb into the palm of his hand, soothing over an old scar there. “I live alone for a reason, Lan Zhan,” he says instead.

    Summary

The guy is so stupid hot that Wei Ying doesn’t turn away in time. He can’t be absolutely sure, but he thinks the guy sees him sort of turned towards him. Not as bad as being caught outright staring at someone on the subway, except that it’s actually probably worse, because they’re in the cultivation gym’s locker room.

Wen Ning nods sagely. “A very wise plan,” he says.

    “Thank you,” Wei Ying says.

“I was being sarcastic,” Wen Ning says, sounding genuinely disappointed that it didn’t come off that way.
