Fitzwilliam Darcy watched the swirling snow with a sense of quiet satisfaction. It had only grown steadily stronger since the previous day and if it continued this way for much longer, the roads would be impassable. He raised his cup to his lips quickly to hide his smile at the thought. It wouldn’t do to be caught looking so happy at what was, in actual fact, a sad development.
Or, the Darcy family faces the prospect of an isolated Christmas.

Wickham, not having spotted Darcy in Meryton, did not share his story with Elizabeth at Mrs Philips’ party; and since the gentleman is already gone by the time of the ball, neither did Collins reveal that he is his patroness’s nephew.

Summary
This is a modern day fic about our lovely Lizzie, and beloved Darcy! This is my first ever written piece (like literally of anything other than a school paper) so feedback is appreciated. I did my best to stay true to the story and characters, but have taken some liberties for a more contemporary twist.
It's rated mature for eventual language, and scenes of a sexual nature.

William Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are strangers who meet in extenuating circumstances, but have an immediate connection. Can a string of misunderstandings and unfortunate events keep them apart, or will love prevail in the end?

“I’m so sorry, I have to go! I can’t explain - it was really nice meeting you, thank you again, I - ” but she was cut off as none other than Caroline Bingley wrapped her arms around Elizabeth’s mystery man. Bill was getting closer, and she couldn’t bear to be seen. “I’m sorry, I have to go.”
“Wait!” He tried to grab her hand, but with no avail.
Against her better judgement, she turned away. With one last look, she saw him with an agitated look try to peel his unwanted visitor away, and she ran down the corridor.

"But we’re too good, Darcy, and I like to keep the good things I find. So let’s just…pick it up. We’ll keep in contact, and whenever we’re in the same city, we’ll find our way back to each other, like nothing has passed.”
“Elizabeth, we don’t know when we’ll see each other again,” he says, with a strange edge to his voice. Mournful, hopeful, warning, wanting. But the look in his eyes tells her that she has him.
“And I’m telling you to live your life, and I’ll live mine, and neither of us owes the other anything. Just when we can, you’ll look for me.” It makes sense, more than anything, and she likes the thought of still belonging to herself.
Eyes fixed on hers, Darcy lifts her hands slowly to his lips, laying light kisses upon them. “Okay. We’ll pick it up.”
The one where they're both always travelling, and it seems like the prudent thing to keep their relationship as something that only happens when they're both in the same place. And that's enough for them— until it isn't.
