    Summary

It’s been almost a year since Tony was rescued from the Ten Rings by SHIELD. In this time, Tony has forged a new path for Stark Industries and taken on a new under-the-radar role as a consultant for SHIELD. Tony’s SHIELD job eventually brings him into contact with the newest Captain America, who’s a pretty cool guy, though for security reasons Tony can’t know his real name or see his face without the Captain America mask. This is also about the time that Tony notices a certain Mr. Stevens, a new hire in SI’s corporate office...

Tony nods. “All right, a start. Now tell me something that really matters.”

Steve gets it without Tony having to elaborate. Tony told Steve things that he wouldn’t have, if he’d known the full extent of their relationships.

“I, uh.” Steve grimaces, which Tony hopes is a promising sign. “I believe that being a good person is a conscious choice. It’s something we have to work at continuously. And I try – I hope – to be a good person, in everything I do. But working with you made me see that I still have a long way to go. I still make assumptions about people. I did about you – when I first read about you in SHIELD files, then when I met you. Each time I was wrong, again and again, and it made me realize that if I had met you without all the cloak and dagger, I wouldn’t have…” Steve trails off, eyes wide as though shocked at his own admission. “If I had the chance to do it all again, I’m not sure what I’d do differently. Does a good person even think like that? I don’t know.”

Tony realizes: shit, he’s done for. He’d hoped for something mediocre, but Steve’s given Tony a knife to stick in him. Putting aside the courage of admitting it, it’s something that Tony can, terrifyingly, relate to.

“Explain to me how all of this - “ and here Clint waved a hand in the air, presumably trying to indicate the empty pizza boxes, the smashed bottles, the toppled tower of red cups, the arrows sticking out of the wall, the rabbits - oh, fuck, the rabbits - and Steve, passed out with his head in Tony’s lap, which was really weird for a number of reasons, the most pressing of which was that Tony really needed to pee, “ - is my fault.”

“Okay, so what you’re saying,” Clint said from underneath the coffee table the next morning, “Is that I threw an awesome party at your house and got everybody drunk and you hooked up with Captain America, and you’re mad at me about this?”

    “I did not - nothing even happened - ”

“Everyone saw,” Natasha pointed out. “Your wall is made of windows.”

“We are not talking about this,” Tony said. “We are not talking about this.”

“Okay, whatever you say, we’re not talking about it. I just have one question.” Clint squinted down at Tony’s lap. “Are you playing with his hair?”

    Tony looked down.

    Fuck.

“What do I want from you? Well, isn’t that the million dollar question,” Tony huffs, hips still working Steve deep, still driving him insane. “I think we’ve established that our wants and needs are a touch more different than we’d ever imagined." The words ring true even as they sting. “But that’s in the past.” He pauses, leaning down to kiss Steve, lick into his mouth, devour him. “Right, babe?”

The attacker doesn't loosen their grip on him but catches the coffee cup, which is such a stupid thing to do for any smart attacker and Tony’s eyes follow the paper cup. But things move too fast and he’s pushed face forward into a wall - not hard this time. But the grip on his arm doesn’t let up.

"Pal, this is not a good idea. Do you know who I am…?" The nanites are ready to bring out the armor, and somehow the smart thing to do would be to call it up. He lets it slowly crawl around his back and chest first.

“No need for that, Tony.” Then he's whirled around and pushed against the wall, vaguely aware that the coffee cup is held to the left of his face and somehow the thing he registers is the coffee shop logo in brown and white on the paper cup instead of the voice or even the face of his attacker.

    Then he's kissed.

    Hard.

“I know.” For the first time he faltered, remembering the first years here. And there was one person here he felt particularly grateful to. He wished that by now he’d managed to work up the courage to call Tony his friend at least - when his interest in the man inappropriately ran a little deeper than that. He never acted nervous around the Avengers’ benefactor and friend, but he got tongue tied and flustered, whenever the man was around. Of course, he knew why that was too. Even now the thought of Tony made a warmth rise in his chest that was unmistakable. Once upon a time Steve Rogers wouldn’t have had a chance to even meet someone like Tony with his Hollywood actor smile and all the money at the bank. Then suddenly he woke up years in the future and shared a home with one of the richest and most attractive men he’d ever met. He still remembered his sweaty palms the first time Tony had sauntered down the steps of the mansion and smiled at him - and his on shock when he’d realized that openly dating a man was possible now.

But how did you ask out a man who just needed to smile at someone to get their attention?
