Summary
The Fire Nation did not succeed in its colonization of Shantudi, a province of the Earth Kingdom, when it first planted its flag in its soil. Nor did it succeed when it annihilated the last traces of organized resistance. Rather, the Fire Nation’s victory was finally achieved on the day when people like Yuetong Chon began to believe that they were better off under Fire Nation rule.
Awkward and timid, her voice monotone and raspy, Yuetong may seem a strange candidate for the officer corps, and yet, her patriotism is undeniable. The depth of her devotion to her beloved country is matched only by the callous indifference the Fire Nation repays her with.
