    Summary

Reginald Jeeves was a man who wanted things he was never meant to have; luxury, security, influence, control over his own life. Because he was brilliant and subtle, he expected to find a way to gain them despite his social status. In meeting Bertie Wooster, he thought he'd found everything he wanted. He never expected to lose his heart in the process.

'I could not fathom this sea-change, this transformation of my regard for him into something rich and strange. I was uncertain whether I could trust my emotions at all, given the intensity of them due to my mother's swiftly impending death. What objectivity I might have possessed had been shattered by the day's events. My thoughts, such as they were, were interrupted by Mr. Wooster's voice.

"I say," he said. "You've been awfully quiet, Jeeves. Do you, well, need to talk at all, old thing?" He looked at me briefly before returning his attention to the road.

    "I don't know, sir," I told him.'

Trades off between flashbacks and a story about Bertie for once helping Jeeves out.

    Summary

Holmes has observed much of Watson's habits and tastes over time, which is why it surprises him when his friend objects strangely to a folk song sung at the conclusion of a case. Disturbed by the Doctor's unexpected display of emotion, Holmes becomes determined to lift his spirits by any means necessary, with mixed results.

"Perhaps it is not that [Watson's] taste in music is all-encompassing, but that it is simply terrible. He does not discriminate in the slightest.

Well, that is not entirely true. Some weeks ago, at the height of summer (though the heat has not abated, unfortunately, in that time), we were called away to Newcastle upon Tyne, which for us was very far afield. We traveled first to Leeds on an early morning express, and then changed trains there for Newcastle. It was a terribly long distance to go for the utterly senseless case we had been engaged upon— locked room murder, that sort of thing, completely trite when it came down to it— but Watson was so pleased to be out of our rooms and on an adventure that for several hours during our interminable journey, I almost couldn't take my eyes off of him."

    Holmes pines politely.

    Summary

“They really didn’t want the mask to come off.” Hill thumbed through the scans, and pulled out a film that she then handed over to Sam, face mostly expressionless but for the flat line of her pursed lips.

Sam accepted the film and held it up to the light, angling so both he and Steve could see it, squinting at the outline of the Winter Soldier’s skull, and the blips of unnatural white that showed up, God, in his brain, not to mention about half his teeth, plus the mask, with its thin protrusions—

“Those are pins,” Steve realized. He looked over at Hill. “The mask—it’s nailed to his face.”

Hill’s face was as unmoved as ever. “Like I said. They really didn’t want it coming off.”

“I always say: when in doubt, do the opposite of Nazis.”

A bubble of laughter in his chest caught Steve by surprise. “Yeah,” he said. “Yeah, I like that one.”

    Good recovery fic.

    Summary

A tiny bit of a reverse Beauty & the Beast. The beautiful scholar prince of a conquered country is given in marriage to the monstrous warrior queen of their conquerors, in an effort to keep his family and his kingdom safe. It's possible that his new wife didn't expect him to be quite as pragmatic about it as he is, though. To be fair, his family didn't either.
