“I --” he breaks off, his shoulders sagging. “I don’t know.”
Because he doesn’t. This is a point that remains unfixed between them and he has no idea how to work his mind through it, to get around the sinking feeling inside of him.

“Fiiiiiitz,” she whines, leaning closer to kiss the corner of his mouth in the way she does when she’s feeling particularly playful (and determined to get laid, if she’s being perfectly honest, because she knows it drives him mad). It has somewhat of the desired effect, causing Fitz to crack open an eye blearily, squinting at her. “Time to get up.”
She almost directs the statement towards his penis but decides against it. She needn’t give him a stroke first thing in the morning.

“My mum would kill me if she saw me doing this,” he hissed, watching as Jemma rolled her eyes, glancing around before darting up onto the altar and grabbing the tiny item, shoving it into her pocket.
“Well your mother isn’t here,” she teased, “and besides, religion is a social construct.”
“Says the one who wasn’t raised by a staunch Catholic,” he retorted. “Let’s get out of here before someone catches us,” he added, fidgeting. They barely made it towards the entrance when they heard voices coming towards them.

Summary
The thought of Fitz alone, traumatised, and segregated from everyone and everything, levels beneath them, made her heart ache. She couldn’t bare the thought of him alone again. Not after everything they had been through. Not after everything he had been through. She had left him alone before, after he nearly died, and what had it done? Caused nothing but pain and heartbreak and animosity between them for ages. And his lack of human contact from his imprisonment while they were all in the future had evidently done him no favours, the demons in his mind swirling until they had surfaced in a rush of agony and terror, nearly drowning him and destroying any sense of calm that had settled around them.
And yet… she found herself focused on her own reality. One where he wasn’t the one who needed fixing, if just in that moment, because of her realisation:
She didn’t know how to sleep without him anymore.
