    "You lost, little bird?"
There is, all too suddenly, someone dressed all in black leaning on the planter box. They are not looking at you. They have, nonetheless, commented on your appearance; they have been there at least long enough to give you a once-over and then affect a casual pose.
You need to be more aware of your surroundings. "No," you say, and offer them a bland smile. "Just resting."
"Well, ‘Just Resting,’" they say, and turn to look down, and speech is lost to you. "If you happen to need help finding things, I can show you around."

    Summary

This is a rationalfic take on "The Last Herald-Mage", inspired by HPMOR and other works. Accessible regardless of whether you've read the original series. Though far from perfect, the characters are trying to do their best with the information, intelligence, and skills they have. Unfortunately, their enemies are also doing that, and sometimes even reasonable decisions can turn out badly.

[Meta note: this starts out a bit slow, and book 1 is kind of a different genre from the rest. In particular, the rationalist content is fairly subtle at the start, and the effective altruism themes come out a lot more towards the end of book 2 and early book 3. If you’re moderately enjoying book 1 but a little bored, try sticking it out until the end of book 2.]

Ashamed of him, Vanyel's father sends his disappointing son to live with his strict aunt, the Herald-Mage Savil. Although he knows things will change, Vanyel dramatically underestimates just how different his life is about to become. Sparks fly as he discovers both love and magic.

    Summary

This is a rationalist and effective altruist take on the Last Herald-Mage trilogy, inspired by HPMOR, r!Animorphs: The Reckoning, and other works. From a starting point of "what if the characters were trying to be reasonable?" and "what if Leareth was a human being with real, complex motivations, rather than a cartoon villain?" I am seeing where it goes.

Meta note: this fic is accessible regardless of whether you’ve read canon. It starts out a little slow, and book 1 is kind of a different genre from book 2 onward. Additional warning that book 2 onward gets pretty dark and this doesn't really let up. There will be 11 volumes.

Major themes include the complexity of thinking about ethics, the challenge of taking on problems in the world that seem insurmountable, and trying to do good while dealing with serious mental health issues. The characters do not start out masters of rationality, but they do learn from their mistakes and grow as people, and do their best to help support each other.
