Summary
“You accused me of treating this like a game. I am sorry if I’ve led you to believe that it is only a game—though I won't deny that part of it is.” Bren gives a disarming smile. “My life is either games or murder, after all.”
“Or mail fraud,” Thelyss says dryly, not even a little disarmed.
“The mail fraud is a sort of game as well.”
A sigh. “Is this your way of telling me that you intend to continue playing?”
Bren smiles again, sharper. “If you would let me.”(In which Bren Aldric Ermendrud decides to seduce the Shadowhand and finds that the best way to convince someone to be vulnerable with you is to be vulnerable in turn.)

Summary
The fact that six mercenaries and a weasel have stowed away on the highest-security vessel in the Dynasty’s fleet is, technically, a serious problem that bodes poorly for the rest of their journey. But Essek is delighted. He’d been dreading a long and tense voyage to Mutalos, without any company except for a skeleton crew comprised mostly of military personnel, the awkward spare scourger, and his—
It feels strange, to think of Beck as his wife. Even calling her his enemy feels too intimate.
(In which Essek agrees to a political marriage to ensure intergalactic peace and keep himself alive, only to discover that his wife has married him for exactly the opposite reason.)

Summary
Essek goes home, and there is no one waiting at his door. This should be some manner of relief. But his towers haven't felt like a safe haven for a long time now, long before errant scourgers appeared to harass him with strange questions. He misses the immediacy of that threat, prefers it over the slow and indulgent terror of whatever punishment is coming for him, someday soon.
He tells himself that he misses only that, the simplicity of being unsafe in the company of predators, and that he does not miss the company itself.
(In which a pair of scourgers shows up at Essek’s doorstep and saves him from himself.)

Summary
Essek has a moment to consider that gravity-based trust exercises have never worked for him, and then the spell hits. He leans back into it, falls, falls.
(In which Essek is resurrected by the Mighty Nein and framed for innocence.)

Summary
“Beauregard – you said she is outside?” Essek half-turns in the direction of the front door. “Should we invite her in?”
It feels like there is something stuck in his throat. “In a moment. She is, ah – giving us some space.”
Essek turns back to stare at him. Repeats quietly, dangerously, “Space.”
Caleb forces himself to swallow. “Yes.”
Essek’s attention is a palpable thing now, sharp like a knife’s edge against his cheek. “Explain.”
One moment makes all the difference during the battle at Blumenthal. In the aftermath, the Nein grapple with what comes next.

Summary
Sitting next to Ikithon at the dinner table, Astrid is unshakeably conscious of two things. One, that the windows are not real. And two: neither is she.
Sixteen years ago, Bren designed a spell. Sixteen years ago, Astrid finished it, alone.
(Or: Astrid can never be forgiven for the crime of not being Bren Aldric Ermendrud--but Caleb Widogast can.)

Summary
Years and this arrangement still felt at times nebulous, shifting—and it would be different again soon, his visits to Rexxentrum would be sanctioned, and he would be able to see Caleb, sometimes, in the daylight while still being able to wear his own face, and he would see much more of Astrid and Eadwulf as well.
A new opportunity arises between the Empire and the Dynasty.

Summary
There are no windows in the ship’s small bay. Still, Caleb swears he can sense the nearby star’s roiling and merciless light, a humming that itches in his skin and burrows into his spine.
It is a dying star, massive and red, slowly expanding to swallow the lifeless planets of this system. They are in close orbit around it to gather enough energy to make this translocation possible. Caleb helped calculate the trajectory: his brain ticks away, tracking the position of the star and their corresponding angular speed.
He knows he must sleep, with what is ahead of them. It eludes him. He stirs and follows the life-support cables to the ship's core.

Summary
“Perhaps I am mistaken,” she finally continues, “and if I am, then I apologise. But if I am not…”
Astrid looks down at the blood now slowly leaking out of her nail bed before wiping it off on her trousers.
“I only wish you to know that if a remaining lifetime in prison is not an adequate enough punishment for him, there are other avenues that can be pursued.”
--
Or: Astrid has suspicions during the trial of Ludinus Da'leth, and confronts Essek on them the best she can.
