    Summary

“They really didn’t want the mask to come off.” Hill thumbed through the scans, and pulled out a film that she then handed over to Sam, face mostly expressionless but for the flat line of her pursed lips.

Sam accepted the film and held it up to the light, angling so both he and Steve could see it, squinting at the outline of the Winter Soldier’s skull, and the blips of unnatural white that showed up, God, in his brain, not to mention about half his teeth, plus the mask, with its thin protrusions—

“Those are pins,” Steve realized. He looked over at Hill. “The mask—it’s nailed to his face.”

Hill’s face was as unmoved as ever. “Like I said. They really didn’t want it coming off.”

    Summary

Bucky'd never wanted to admit that he only felt alive when Steve was touching him as though sculpting him from clay. Some days, Bucky wished that Steve could—wanted to encase himself in some viscous substance just so Steve could recover him with his hands, guide his true shape into form. So he could become manifest by way of artistic vision.

(In Wakanda, Bucky tries to find himself. Steve tries to find him, too.)

Another post-Black Panther and pre-Infinity War interlude. Beautifully written. Steve and Bucky's love for each other is gloriously stubborn.

"I never stopped," he says, and the gaps fill themselves: he never stopped caring, never gave up on... whatever they had. "Through everything, Bucky, through—the war, through… losing you, through getting you back, through the last six months waiting for… I never quit—" He stops walking, swallowing hard. Bucky looks over he sees the kind of fiery determination he'd recognize from a thousand yards; his, Steve Rogers'. Accept no substitutes. "I know you're trying to remember," Steve tells him, looking him dead in the eye. "I just didn't want there to be any doubt."

    Summary

The whole ship is like that: alive with light, as if light were the blood in its veins. It still bothers him when he's not tired enough to sleep, but he's starting to get used to it. Starting to appreciate that the thing he lives inside is almost as much of an organism as he is. Strange, but also strangely reassuring.

Sometimes when he lies in the dark here, cocooned in his bunk, he wonders what it's like in the tube. If it's quiet. He hopes it's restful. Peaceful. Soft, like the sleep of late morning, with sun coming in from around the drapes. Steve wonders if the translucent panel that covers and shields and contains him also lets in light. If behind his closed eyelids, he can still see something, the way that Steve can when he shuts his own eyes here, now. If he is seeing a kind of permanent sunrise; a long dream of a slow dawn.

I'm not given to swearing but. I love this fic, but I really mean more like: I fucking love this fic. A Steve Rogers character piece, beautifully written.

"Wow," Rocket says. "You are a real weirdo."

    "Thanks," says Steve.

I love this story to bits. Bucky and Shuri's friendship is life-giving, and Bucky and Steve's relationship is both steadfast and fragile. A lovely, lovely post-Black Panther interlude.

Bucky, nationless for a long time now, had forgotten what patriotism felt like.
He knew he loved Steve, though. That, he knew.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I know Infinity War is coming up, but let Bucky and Shuri have a beginning of a beautiful friendship, and let our boys have a tense-y reunion and ultimately satisfying HEA. This author spun off from the post-credit scene so well--finally, finally, Steve. Even I felt like I could breathe in the end.

Steve asks his questions and Bucky answers some of them. But there’s a peace in his silence. A peace in Bucky.

Steve’s lost the heart to ask him to go, to leave with him.
