Kokichi can feel the eyes on him wherever he goes, unmoving, unblinking. He's convinced that his mind is playing tricks on him until he receives confirmation of his fears in the worst way possible.
non-killing game AU, high school setting. pre-game personalities (in a really weird convoluted way?) chapters with graphic depictions of tags will have a warning at the beginning.
please take caution when reading and check the tags regularly.

"Saihara-chan, don’t you think the idea of a phantom thief and a detective having a secret romance would be really fun?"
- Part 2 of beneath the mask
13 Oct 2017
The paperwork on his desk must be stacking up, never-ending, he imagines. All because this hassle of a so-called phantom thief is out there wanting to make a name of himself out to the world.
And said case belongs to no one other than to him, the detective of this story.

“They’d be here too, to greet you, but we didn’t want to overwhelm you with a big group.” Kaede explains softly. “Actually, we’ve been sending in one person at a time to be there when people woke up, because that feels more manageable, but- well, all three of us wanted to be here when you got up. It wouldn’t have been fair if any of us had been absent.”
“Oh yeah?” Kokichi raises an eyebrow.
“I know when I woke up,” Kaede looks over at Rantaro, a meaningful look on her face. (Rantaro’s smile diminishes, turns into something more sympathetic.) “I broke down because I failed.”
(Mostly, though, he wakes up from the simulation, deals with the knowledge that his plan failed, and talks to everyone else too.)

Kokichi keeps lying, even after the killing game is over. Mostly to himself.
He should've known Shuichi would see through it like he always does.
