“Hey,” Eddie says, leaning back against the kitchen table. “You’ve been quiet lately."

It almost feels like—like nerves, or some shit, which doesn’t make any sense, because the symbiote never had trouble calling him a pussy and a loser before it all almost ended.

Or: Eddie and his symbiote learn to be together.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Excellent Childermass character study and a meditation on loss. A what-if fic that manages to explore characters and griefs we already know in a new way, but doesn't ultimately change the outcome of the story. It's also written beautifully in the style of the book!

    Summary

I was walking home when I suddenly heard my own thoughts as clearly as though they were being whispered into my ear. How wonderful. I had just caught sight of my Attolian, leaning against the cairn where the road forked one way for the temple and one way for the village. He'd been on his way home when he realised that it was near my time and so turned back to wait for me that we might walk together.

How wonderful. And how easy it could be to forget that life is anything more than this.
