    Summary

“Come on, Jyn!” he calls, as if he could make her short legs run faster by sheer will, and they skid past a pair of medics with a full stretcher. “Come on!”

As soon as he says it, a voice crackles over the comm system in dire warning.

Imperial troops have entered the base, the sentry warns before being cut off abruptly and Cassian stumbles on his feet, pushing Jyn in front of him up the transport’s ramp.

    Summary

“It’s good to see you,” Nina mumbled into Inej’s neck, sending a long shiver down her spine as the hug ended. “It’s good of you to come.” She looked right at home already.

But when Inej looked more closely, the haggard edges around her friend were more visible. The years since they’d parted hadn’t dimmed the loss of Matthias or her determination, and even still, Fjerda was no place for a Grisha.

Reaching up, Inej cradled Nina’s cheeks in her palms and smiled as Nina’s eyes fluttered shut.

“Welcome aboard,” Inej said, and led her down below by her hand.

    Summary

“I can’t really see what you’re doing,” she admitted, kneeling away from the lock. He’d strung a heavy chain between the two barrels of his desk, locked together with a Schuyler padlock. “Or I’m just not very good at it,” she admitted.

He shook his head, kneeling down heavily next to her on his bad leg. “Anyone can learn,” he said. “I had to.” Making room for him in front of the lock, she watched him cradle the lock with one hand and pull the glove off the other with his teeth, dropping it on the floor; and suddenly, she had to remember to breathe.

    Summary

“Where am I?” she mumbles, trying to sit up and failing. Her mouth felt awful – it had probably been a while since she’d used the ‘fresher, and the thought triggers a nausea that sends the room into a loose spin. She clutches her stomach and shuts her eyes, forcing herself into focus. “What are you doing here?”

K-2 gives a loud sigh that she is absolutely sure he had added to his programming specifically for her benefit. “Jyn Erso,” he says, “you are required to take your medicine. The 2-1B unit which released you to me did so only under the condition that I ensured you took your medicine on schedule.”

She cracks her eyes open again, scrambling for memories. “I was in the medbay?”

K-2 sniffs with irritation – though this time not at her but at some past event. “You were in quarantine.” He pauses and then extends a long arm towards her with the medicine. “You are required to take your medicine, Jyn Erso,” he says, adding with an almost earnest note, “Cassian made me promise.”

    Summary

Trying to get more comfortable, she looped an arm around his waist – and almost on instinct, she feels something tick into place. Here. Home.

    She’s not alone.

If she hadn’t been paying very close attention, she might have missed the way his eyelids fluttered down, or the clench of his jaw giving away a bite of his inner lip. If she hadn’t been this close to him, she might have missed exactly how tightly he was holding himself in place, or the surprised catch of his breath.

    She doesn’t miss it.

    Summary

Back on Scarif, she hadn’t thought beyond the mission itself. Her mind was too jangled with nerves and failsafes to worry about anything else. For all that, when she’d realized they’d have to jump from the command station to the data tower, her first thought hadn’t been about herself.

She’d been thinking about him, and his safety, and his survival. It was unexpected, and unfamiliar, but not unwelcome. It felt like coming home, even in the midst of battle and a war she couldn’t see the end of. Even if they failed at this, even if the Rebellion was crushed and a thousand planets were destroyed by her father’s second daughter – she wouldn’t leave him behind.

More than that, she trusted him not to leave her either.

(In some ways – she’d never stopped.)

    Summary

He can still picture him, though the image in his mind has grown rusty around the edges, a reminder to himself that Miller has aged. Monty tries to imagine what he looks like now one year gone, two years, six years. Six years can do a lot of damage. Perhaps he’d grown his beard out, or had an injury that dropped his shoulder, or put on more muscle from lack of anything else to occupy him, going as stir crazy as Monty suspects he has gone.

(Perhaps – maybe – he’d be just the same.)

Monty traces the lines of Miller’s face in his mind, his thumb running over Miller’s sweet lips, and tries to taste him across space and time. A thousand more chances run through his fingers and he grasps at them in turn, promising himself that if he gets one more, just one, he won’t second guess himself again, or worry what Miller will think of him, or whether someone else is watching them.

    This time, he’ll leap.

    Summary

    First thing, they run.

    (They don’t look back.)

Later, Elektra will think of the sound their feet made, hitting the pavement in determined strides as they retreated from the chaos of the roof and slipped away, moving between the spines of tall buildings to make their escape. She’ll think of how there hadn’t been a cloud in the sky, the lights of the city bleeding out the edges of the universe, and the short, even pants that Matthew made as he ran beside her.

She’ll think of the way their hands fit together, refusing to let go even for speed, now or ever.

(She’ll think of the price they paid, and what she left behind.)

If Matthew thinks of it as well – he doesn’t say.

    Summary

“Power suits me,” he answers and she nods noncommittally, pulling a knee up as her other foot dangles free. He wants to ask: where did you go? why did you stay away so long? Instead, he clears his throat and adds, “I didn’t expect you so soon after your note.” He hadn’t even had time to get his hair cut in the day since she’d suggested the meet.

Her smile twists into something new and an old ache turns in him, knowing that in some ways, she really is gone forever. “The sea is an unpredictable partner,” she says and he barely keeps from rolling his eyes at her.

“More Suli wisdom?” he asks and she settles back against the window frame, eyes tilted out to the tops of the buildings.

“The Suli don’t have much to say about the sea,” she answers, and then looks at him again. “But it’s good to be back, Kaz.”

    Summary

She didn’t like to think of it but – her mother, her father, and Saw – they were all wisps of memory to her now, and little more. Their memories were feather light, admonitions and gentle advice mixed together with their deaths, and she had learned her lessons well.

    But she’d made a mistake.

    She’d held on to Cassian.

    Summary

She nods and slides out of the booth, her calm manner belying the sudden uptick of her heart. Rebels. It’s too little to go on and too dangerous to hope, but the ache of Saw’s abandonment is still a sharp wound in her chest. Beyond that, the tattered fragments of her mentor’s intermittent warnings still flutter at the surface of her mind.

If they’re not here for her, she can’t give them a reason to be, and if they are here for her, she’s in more trouble than even Solo knows.

(As she slips out of the cantina, she shoulders past a stern-looking man in a leather jacket heading in the direction she just came from, sharp eyes parsing out the crowd behind her.)

    Summary

“Let me know if you change your mind,” she says as she brushes past him to the ‘fresher, taking her hair down to repin it. The mirror is higher on the wall and from the corner of his eye he watches her stand on her socked toes, reaching up to see better. He’s seen her hair down twice before – times that he, captain in Rebel Intelligence and seasoned soldier most definitely does not think about when his mind wanders.

    (Most definitely.)

She frowns as she brushes her hair out with her fingers, the cropped edges catching in tangles that she tugs out with efficient focus. He’s staring by now, distracted by the way shorter pieces catch at her neckline and the way the lighter shades of her hair catch in the fluorescent light of the ‘fresher. In a moment, however, she’s swept her hair back up into her customary bun, tucking loose edges behind her ears.

“What?” she asks and he startles, realizing he’s been caught as she looks back at him in the mirror. He shakes his head, playing it off.

“I think you might have been right about that fried likchi,” he says.

(He doesn’t drink in her delighted grin. He doesn’t.)

    Summary

“I’m not used to people sticking around when things go bad,” she says, her face lifted up to his and an echo in his brain is trying to make him focus. It’s hard to listen in the light of her joy.

“Welcome home,” he answers, leaning closer, and almost almost almost but it’s not the time or the place, no matter how easy it would be, because that echo in his brain is always there. Her smile is blinding and he grins, as much as anyone like him can remember how to grin, and for one split second he forgets where he is.

    (So, it seems, does she.)

    Summary

Saw leaves her just the way he found her – alone, in the dark, waiting for someone to come back. This time, when she realizes nobody is coming, the realization bursts her lungs and she is trying to catch her breath, eyes screwed shut, and shuts out every thought of what comes next.

(She knows she’ll never see it coming.)

Finally, her breaths come steady, her eyes open, and she grips the blaster at her side.

There is no time for tears.

    (There never is.)

    Summary

Words have always been her ally – never his – and his fists curl at his sides, holding himself together. It builds and flows and changes as they grow, and the sand shifts under his feet, caution plaguing his every move.

Sorry, he tells her, over and over, in as many ways as he can imagine, and tastes her apology in return. They stumble, unskilled and uncertain, and catch each other as they fall.

(Somehow – slowly – their fights ease into something else.)

    Summary

He leads and she checks him, though he’s less prone to rebel tendencies when he’s the king.

“You’re a pain in the ass, Raven,” he says when she hands him the requisition list and she grins.

“Happy to serve,” she jokes, and he walks backwards into a wall as he tries to make a smooth exit.

She doesn’t quite manage not to laugh at him. For all her memories of the ground that she’d like to forget, there are others more bittersweet than bitter. She turns them over in her memory when nobody is looking, private thoughts that grow from seeds into more. She remembers the way he’d jumped when she’d yelled BOOM!; how he carried her when she had fallen to the ground, anguished and speechless; how he’d closed the shuttle door, and she’d breathed easy for the first time that day.

    She remembers.

    Summary

“I can’t tell you that,” she says, her tone distant, but when she looks at him, there’s definitely a hint of a smile around her eyes. He frowns, confused. “What, you don’t trust me now?”

She shrugs, looking back out at the road. “Tiger don’t change its stripes,” she says, and even though she’s actually smiling now, it’s a private smile, not for him. He can’t tell where the joke ends and the truth begins.

(Given the circumstances, he can’t blame her.)

    Summary

She skids around a corner, catching her breath, when she sees him about to board a shuttle.

In the next moment, he sees her.

Instinct propels her across the distance, and he’s already made it off the shuttle ramp by the time she collides with him, practically running him over as she buries him into a hug. He recovers quickly enough, his arms easily finding their place around her, and she burrows her head in his chest, still chasing her breath.
