There were odd sightings in a forest to the south. People would claim lights and screaming could be heard from there. People would claim they were from ghosts burned to death in some great temple fire from long ago, and if you got too close they would burn you with them.

Hua Cheng turned the ghost upside down and shook it until a small glass bottle fell from the folds of its robes. Xie Lian caught the bottle effortlessly.
“What is this? Some sort of potion?” Xie Lian almost popped open the lid but thought better of it. He had promised Hua Cheng to be careful when touching unknown, potentially dangerous things.
“It’s for lovers,” the ghost squeaked. Still upside down, it looked back and forth from Hua Cheng to Xie Lian. “A... an unforgettable experience! Give it to the object of your affection and see!”

“I’m back, gege,” Hua Cheng says as if it was somehow unclear before. Xie Lian has got half the mind to kiss him again just to make sure he’s not hallucinating, but he just smiles instead and takes his hand.
“Welcome back,” he murmurs; softly, quietly, as if anything louder would shatter the moment and Hua Cheng with it. “Let’s go in?”
They do; hand in hand, Hua Cheng right behind him. Xie Lian feels his presence like it’s physical. He wants it to be. He wants those lips back on his and those hands back on his waist.
One year after the fall of Jun Wu, Hua Cheng returns. Xie Lian welcomes him back with open arms and an unwavering conviction that whatever the future holds, from this day on they'll face it together.
