“Well, I’ll be damned!” The old man crowed and tugged Merlin closer “How have you not seen it, Uther? The resemblance is uncanny!” He beamed, ruffling the servant’s hair “Sorry, son. You look like an old friend of ours. Good ole’ Balinor. A member of court before Uther chased him away.” The man snorted and Arthur’s gaze jerked up.
“Balinor?” He asked sharply and turned where his father was taking a sip of his wine “The dragonlord?”
An old friend of Uther’s drops by and notices Merlin looks familiar. Arthur remembers Merlin’s reaction to Balinor’s death and puts the pieces together.
Arthur hadn’t thought much of what his greatest fear would be until it was carved into his skin. The only thing worse was finding out what everyone else was afraid of.
Arthur opened his eyes a minute later to the sight of seven magpies streaking across the top of the clearing, their shapes dark against the white clouds and the muted grey of the sky. He tried to remember what it was that seven magpies meant—he'd had a nurse who had sung the rhyme to him as a child—but couldn't.
Arthur wakes up somewhere he doesn't recognise, but where he clearly belongs.
“My mommy's name is Nim. I'm Arthur. Like the king of Camelot,” Arthur bragged.
Merlin gasped in excitement. “My name's Merlin!” he said, beaming. “And my mommy—she says Merlin was a wizard and King Arthur's best friend!”
Arthur frowned in thought. “D'ya think we should be best friends, then?”
“I dunno. You're kind of mean.” Merlin told Arthur matter of factly.
“Well your ears are weird.”
Merlin's hands flew to his ears. “They are not!” he squawked.
“It's okay,” Arthur assured him, “this makes us even. So are we best friends?”
Arthur and Merlin literally collide when they are five years old. From there, they slowly, stumblingly grow into their connected destinies as the king and his wizard. Written for Paperlegends 2013.
