The first time she sees him, he’s perched on her windowsill, a shiny stone clutched in his beak. He’s big for a crow, his feathers as glossy and black as the onyx stone she wears around throat, and there’s intelligence in his eyes as he watches her. The window is open to let the bitter smell of the potion she’s brewing get carried away by the cool autumn breeze, but he makes no move to enter.
Rey bites back a shiver as she meets his piercing gaze, a tingle dancing up her spine. What it means yet, she doesn’t know. She’s had strange dreams these last few nights though, filled with midnight wings and feathers brushing her skin.
Something is coming, they told her. Change, change comes on swift wings.

Rey Kenobi spends her days trying to focus on her classes, working at the on-campus cafe to pay off her crippling student debt, and hopefully beating irritating and entitled Ben Solo in a contest for a scholarship and writing job she's always dreamed of.
But in her free time, she's KiraofJakku, an online writer and member of a Discord writing group, struggling to balance her college career and passion for fiction. When she finally works up the nerve to message her favorite author and fellow Discord member, KyloRen, an unlikely friendship blooms.
Ben Solo just wants to write. Not important articles or essays to change the world and win him awards like his professor and uncle, Luke, but simple stories for people to enjoy, sci-fi and fantasy epics that get nominated for book club reads. Yet, since he was born, his path has been laid out for him, to follow in the footsteps of his uncle and mother.
But when a kind and honest reader, KiraofJakku, randomly messages him, she opens up a passion and desire he never expected. For his writing, for making his own path in his life... for her.

Rey’s always thought her roommate was attractive, but when she catches him with only a towel on, a contest slowly ensues to see who can drive the other more insane as time goes on.
Or, where Rey and Ben are both idiots in denial and refuse to give in.
‘Fuck, your lips are blue,’ Ben observes, and he bites down on his own, clearly thinking something through.
‘What?’ she asks, regarding him warily.
‘Your clothes are wet,’ Ben says, matter-of-factly. ‘You won’t warm up while they’re still against your skin.’
She stares at him. ‘You want me to take my clothes off?’
He swallows hard. ‘Yeah.’
She stares at him some more. This is, she realises, the most they have ever openly looked at one another. This isn’t the sneaky, almost hungry glances they exchange with one another at school. This isn’t the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it admiration she normally catches from him when he thinks she isn’t looking.
This is something else.
Ben and Rey spend some time alone in a cabin in the woods.

“Was it you who suggested this...procedure?” He paused around the word as if it was barbed.
“No,” she said to his desk. “My employers heard me one night. I was… Well, it...I…” Her breath came faster and her cheeks pinked.
Ben waited, curiosity piqued.
Rey inhaled shallowly and flicked a nervous glance at him. “I was dreaming of— Oh, it’s not important.” She flapped a hand as if to dismiss the subject, but Ben could see the tremble of her fingers. “And anyway, I must have made a...sound. In my sleep. And someone heard it. And now I am seen to be hysterical and in need of a relaxative paroxysm. Because heaven forbid there to be a hysterical governess. Think of the children, and all that.” Her casual tone clashed with the rest of her; she was as red as a beet and a wisp of curling brown hair escaped from her updo to brush against her cheek. She swept it away with an unsteady hand.
“What were you dreaming about?” His voice sounded awfully low to his own ears. He wasn’t sure why he asked; as she’d said, it wasn’t important.
Rey opened her mouth, appeared to struggle with her sentence, then pursed her lips at the window and choked out a short laugh. “It’ll sound ridiculous,” she said quietly.

“Back in the old days when the west was still wild, and this state was part of Mexico, this small town used to be an even smaller village. And in that small village lived a beautiful woman. Some say her name was Maria, some say her name was Reina – named for a queen – but the truth of the matter is no one really knows her name. What matters is her beauty, and the curse that came along with it,” Maz begins, settling into her chair comfortably before continuing.
“The folklore will tell you she waited until she found someone to match her beauty and help her gain riches. I don’t think that’s true. History is never kind to women. Back then, women were at the mercy of their fathers or husbands. I’m sure her father waited until someone with pockets lined with gold made him an offer he couldn’t refuse and sold her off.”
Rey shivers at the particular set of words. She knew all too well what it was like to be sold off to someone. Digging her nails into her palms, she forces herself to focus on the rest of the story.
