The traffic light turned red and his car stopped right in front of the broadcasting building. He made a great mistake to take a look of the massive public screen hung on the front of it because, after a whole week broadcasting a new comeback music video of a famous South Korean boyband, he didn’t think he would see the face he had just seen in his dream this morning, looking so soft and bright only in an oversized red knitted sweater for a high-end skincare commercial. His wild hair in the past had been cut neatly following the new trend of today’s style. His eyes crinkled at the corner as he smiled to the camera, tapping the top side of the bottle he was holding onto his sharp chin.
Wei Ying was still as beautiful as he remembered from their younger days.
(“Lan Zhan, ah, Lan Zhan, I love you so much.” He smiled so brightly, “Please don’t ever leave me.”)

“Alright.” Wei Wuxian said calmly, “Kneel then.”
The stranger pressed the sword onto his neck harder.
“Either you kneel now and I save him, or we can keep doing this and risking his life in each breath you waste.” Wei Wuxian raised his eyebrows, “Your choice.”
The stranger looked back, to another stranger who resembled him so much, might have been born from the same womb, bleeding from his abdomen to almost faint. He looked back at Wei Wuxian and then sheathed his sword with resentment in his eyes.
The physician lifted his chin with a small smirk when the stranger did kneel in front of him, dirtying his pristine robes, degrading his esteem.
“That’s not so hard, is it?” The physician chuckled, “Now, A-Yuan, bring the poor man inside.”
(“Breaking news! Breaking news! Emperor Jin raised the award for Twin Jades’ heads into three thousand and four hundred gold taels!” The newsman shouted in the middle of the pathway.)

Lan Xichen stood in front of Jingshi, fist hovering, ready to knock on the door to notify his younger brother about his arrival.
But he hesitated because the news he brought along was going to seriously devastate Lan Wangji.
(“I am sorry, Wangji… Wei Wuxian had died…”)
The first time Lan Wangji met Wei Wuxian, he knew the man was the rumoured Fallen One, the powerful cultivator who was being punished by the heavens because of his demonic cultivation.
He had lived for almost six-hundred years in order to fulfill the eighty-thousand soul contracts as his punishment in his loneliness. He remained immortal, not aging, not dying, until he finished them all.
Lan Wangji had heard the tales about the Fallen One, but he had never expected he would’ve looked like this. None of those tales he had heard telling him that the man was dangerously alluring.
(“Lan Zhan, ah, Lan Zhan, you’re a very good kid.” Wei Wuxian patted his head, “I have to go now, but when we meet again in the future, Lan Zhan, I want you to remember that to your lips only, my name is Wei Ying.”)
Far in the uninhabited mountain of Yiling, there was a place called Burial Mounds, where the living would become dead, and the dead would become undead. It was known there was only one man living in the cave there, the descendant of the demon himself.
They called him the Yiling Patriarch.
The tales and the lores told people at the foot of the mountain to stay inside their houses when the sun hid in the west, or he would come down and take them with him, to eat their hearts as the fuel of his demonic cultivation, and he would create the undead army from their bodies, to bow only under his command, to bend only under his order, to act only under the shrill resonance of his dizi.
(What had ailed this beautiful man so? Lan Wangji wondered unconsciously, he wanted to learn this man’s stories.)

Xiao Zhan hears about it from Yu Bin, which probably should've been the first warning sign.
