“I know what you are,” Nicole whispers one night, voice afire.
“And you love me still?” Waverly asks, her words a landslide.
Waverly is ocean water and shimmering sea glass. Nicole cannot help but love her.
Nicole has spent her whole life by the ocean. She has never met anyone like Waverly before.
Both of them trapped, they long for the freedom of the waves. But Waverly is not entirely what she seems...
- Part 3 of EFA fic challenges
Nicole Haught has always had a rebellious streak. Coupled with a more or less parentless childhood, there was always a chance she would get herself into serious trouble. But after she is forced to skip school too many times, things come to a head and a judge deems her parents unfit guardians. As a result, she is shipped across the country to the rural mountains of southern Alberta, as part of a ‘court-approved truancy prevention program’. Here she is to live with the judge’s personal friend, as well as his wife and nieces.
Nicole is required to work on Curtis McCready’s farm and attend a new school until graduation. Her counter-plan is simple: have her best friend come and pick her up early on the day she turns eighteen, and simply remain as disinterested as possible in the meantime. After all, she has been alright on her own before now. She doesn’t need a family. But then she is welcomed in by the McCreadys and, in particular, by their niece Waverly, and life suddenly takes on a new meaning...
[The Taking Flight AU I didn't ever expect to write]
“You know, I really am just here to buy toothpaste.”
For the first time after the Poker Spectacular, Waverly and Nicole venture out together on a completely innocuous trip to the drugstore. There is something brewing in Waverly - something that makes her taste different - and she just wants to brush the tang of it right out of her mouth.
But this is not the only bad taste lingering; after being outed, Waverly is not yet prepared to feel as though someone has lit a spotlight over her, prompting a conversation with Nicole about their future.
A standalone hurt/comfort oneshot about the challenges Waverly and Nicole might have faced at the start of their relationship.
- Part 3 of Gingerbread
It is the summer after graduation and Waverly has allowed herself to be dragged along on a beach vacation with some of the kids from school. She is undeniably excited for several weeks of sun and sand with Chrissy Nedley, but less happy to have Champ Hardy trailing around behind her like a lovesick puppy.
When she refuses to give in to his advances, he sets his sights on making her jealous by turning on the charm offensive with one of the cute lifeguards. The poor girl seems pretty underwhelmed by the attention. In fact, she seems to have eyes for someone else entirely...
The beach vacation au with lifeguard!Nicole that you absolutely don't want or need but I've written anyway.
"That will be us one day, Nicole thinks, gazing across the room at the top table as the groom prepares to bring his speech to a close. Waverly will be smiling like she is now, dressed in white with wildflowers in her hair…"
Even on the occasion of Chrissy Nedley’s wedding day, Nicole can only find eyes for Waverly; resplendent in her bridesmaid dress of the deepest green Nicole has ever seen. Even after years, the sight of her steals Nicole’s breath - like she is seeing Waverly for the first time, like she is falling over again.
Still, Nicole cannot believe she calls this woman her girlfriend, even as she knows that one day she will make Waverly her wife…
