Summary
Solf J. Kimblee returns the philosopher's stone like a dutiful soldier, gets ptsd post war, gets sent East on a mission to recruit some Elric brothers, and then, on top of all of this TERRIBLE time he's having without a philosopher's stone - the homunculi tell him he has to make sure the human sacrifices (ie. the Elrics) don't die. That'd be all well and good, but the Elric brothers are death-seekers.
Also, Maes Hughes is his friend. Because Maes Hughes is the type of person who'd look at Kimblee and say: sometimes, once in a blue moon, he can be friend shaped. Good enough for me.
