    Lance finally writes about Keith.

Because finally he knows what to say, because this thing they have right now, that fits into the spaces between their bodies, nebulous and made entirely by themselves, is new and different from anything before.

To Lance, Keith is all brimstone and flame, like hot coals under his feet, urging him on and on and on, but also burning like the sun, a steady presence. He’s fireworks and candles, the heat winding through Varadero homes in summer, the warm sands of both his Sonoran desert and Lance’s beach. Keith is like Earth to Lance, in the same way rain and sea are, a constant now, in the way his memories of Cuba are, something he carries with him.

Lance writes in the book Keith gave him, waits for Keith to wake up on his bed, sheets beside him mussed as has been normal of the past few nights, and writes.

or, lance becomes a poet, learns how to deal with life and all the complications that come with it, and falls in love for the second time (because the first was already reserved)

“I think,” Lance continues, “that’s why my family thought we were dating.” He pauses. “Because I talk about you like you put the moon in the sky.”

Keith gathers the courage to ask for the one thing he’s been wanting wanting wanting for almost as long as he’s known Lance –

    “Can I kiss you?”

    Summary

    “Lance!”

The word floats at him like a lantern through the fog, and he lifts his head to the light. He’s dreaming now, right? Handheld slowly into death by a comforting hallucination?

No. No, the owner of that voice is really here.

The shape of him is a beacon of familiarity in this upside-down hellish nightmare, and Lance is just gone enough to let himself feel saved even though he knows better. Because somehow, at the end of the world, somehow Keith Kogane is here, emerging from the smoke and the flashing lights like some kind of hero. Despite everything, despite the taste of blood between his teeth, Lance feels his lip twitch upward into a tired smile. Because of course Keith is here. Of course. Where else would he be?

    . . .

The war ends, and Lance must take on the monumental choice of what he's going to do next with his life. The clock is ticking and even though they've won the war, it looks like Keith is STILL going to slip away from him.

That is, unless he does what he does best, and just takes the shot.

“It’s not like I cut myself off from all civilization.” Keith says. “Shiro’s neighbours are home—”

    “I don’t think you’ve ever talked to Shiro’s neighbours.”

“Would it make you feel better if I introduced myself to Shiro’s neighbours?”

“It would make me feel better if you had told me that you were going to be alone this winter break.” Lance grumbles lowly, leaning back until his shoulders hit the chair behind him.

    “I’m telling you now.”

Lance rubs his hand over his face, tries not to sound frustrated. “Why are you telling me now?”

Keith falters, thinks over his words. Lance bets he doesn’t know why he’s telling him now either. “Because I thought you should know.” He finally settles on. Because you can’t do anything about it.

    --

In which Lance travels across 1,681 kilometers, sees the sky and the water meet for the first time, and falls in more ways than one.
