    Summary

NOW FINISHED "When ancient seafaring ships fought battles the decks would become slippery with blood. They used to scatter sand to give the sailors traction as they fought to reload the cannons. Starships don't carry sand. But right now, on deck 5, that looks like an oversight."

Something is wrong on Deneb III. And something is wrong with Kirk too. Attempt to write TOS style with its roots in a TOS episode.

    Bookmarker's Notes

You cannot shock or squick me easily, and I am willing to stretch my imagination quite a bit to allow room for unusual or OOC-prone material. That is, if it is well-written. I value spot-on characters very much in KIrk/Spock fandom; so if you try to throw domestic violence, rape or other abuse into the mix, or if you explore psychological abysses and health issues, you better do it brilliantly. Same goes for certain kinks and sexual practices. Make it credible, authentic and K/S-compatible (i.e., don't just slap their names on two random characters) - and I am willing to go along. There are definitely dark tones and themes in Star Trek TOS, and if you are able to let Kirk and Spock act them out without losing their defining voices, then do it, please. I list all these possible concerns and try to get them out of the way, because this rec is a fic with very dark tones: C. M. Decarnin's "Entreat Me Not to Leave Thee". And I want to make clear that these dark tones were NOT an obstacle for me. What made me hesitate, however, was the fact that this classic is an unfinished piece. Read more about this work on Fanlore or go directly to the story. You won't regret reading it; yes, it is only a fragment, but so well-written, and it deals with Dom/sub dynamics in a very authentic (and explicit) way.

This novel has been recced to me repeatedly by reliable sources, and also because the author is simply wonderful. It does come from a fandom which is rather alien to me: TNG, Picard/Riker. I have watched my share of TNG, albeit not very enthusiastically, but I never really understood the appeal of this pairing. This fic does change this, however. It is a beautiful story about healing and mending, based on very serious topics (childhood sexual abuse, PTSD).

    Fact: Spock has boobs.

Fact: this is quite possibly the happiest day of Jim Kirk's life thus far.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I rarely read het fic, and I avoid it like the plague if it is done in a m/m fandom by means of unmotivated "genderswapping" one of the characters. Note: I said "one of the characters". I have nothing against alternate universes full of hot lesbian Kirk/Spock sex. (In fact, when I die, I hope the after-life is something like a universe full of hot lesbian Kirk/Spock sex - and I hope, they are okay with me joining the fun.) But there's something about these one-sided genderswap fanfics that makes me easily believe the author thought homosexual sex so icky that she felt compelled to turn it into het. Which is not really the point of this fandom, now, is it? This being said, I hardly click on a genderswap fic (unless it deals with Turnabout Intruder, of course, because my fandom canonically invented genderswap; and if it deals with it in a convincing way). But I did click on this one - and it was a hilarious ride: Matt Metzger's "A Bra on Kirk's Floor", which is wonderfully cracky, yet sweet and hot. Also, boobs. Bouncy Vulcan boobs. Check it out on K/S Archive. I admit, its being a humorous piece definitely helps me stomach the het. Matt Metzger is surely not one of those writers who deny Kirk and Spock their good male lovin' on a regular basis - therefore, I can easily accept this field trip into the wonderful land of transporter-induced gender swap. Oh, and this is reboob, erm, reboot universe.

    Summary

Spock, a married systems engineer from Vulcan, dutifully attended the VSA and married the woman his father arranged for him to marry. Then one day his company sends him to San Francisco to help build galaxy-class heavy cruisers for Starfleet. While there, he meets Starfleet's galactic savior, fresh from the VGer crisis, Admiral James T Kirk, and Spock's life is forever changed.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Forgoing the seminal K/S scenes of The Motion Picture in favour of an AU that has Spock tied to T'Pring and Kirk to Lori? Is this setting even thinkable? It is - in this charming and engaging AU that is not afraid to picture Kirk and Spock in a believable "What if" situation: What if Kirk and Spock's lives had evolved separately and they only met each other later in life, more or less by coincidence?
What makes this story so exciting is that this AU does not put the characters into a completely foreign situation but stays very close to Roddenberry's universe, citing important events from TOS (and this it does in a very clever way!), keeping the characters and - mutatis mutandis - also their specific traits and problems. This Spock did not have to go through Gol and his catharsis during TMP, but a lifetime of trying to fit into Vulcan society is no small achievement either.
Interestingly, DeeGilles's Spock seems much more accepting of his Human side - but I would not call him out of character. In fact, it does shed a light on the personality of the original Spock, whose struggles seem to stem in large part from his very involvement in Human society - and from his life with Jim Kirk aboard the Enterprise. The married AU Spock, however, appears much more relaxed, albeit in a resigned way. The turn of events in this fic is thus not so much an internal, psychological one, but more a transformation of his situation - or rather: a correction of this universe. I do not want to reveal too much, as I write this LoC to make you aware of this fic and urge you to read it. But this much I can say: You are going to find romance and angst, humour and a new insight into Vulcan society, in an entertaining and well-constructed story. This fic is short and sweet: In only 13 chapters plus an epilogue you will witness how Spock's life is turned upside down by the force of nature that is Jim Kirk. A few parts could have done with a longer and more detailed presentation, but on the whole the fic does not appear rushed. While I still have some difficulties picturing how they ever made it through the V'Ger crisis without Spock, I am more than willing to suspend my doubts in order to fully enjoy this AU. Adding the irresistible beauty of Admiral Kirk in his short-sleeved white uniform shirt certainly helped.
