God, how Irving would hate him for this, but God, how Tozer loved to be fucked by a man who hated him—loved the thrill of knowing some essence of his body or being could overpower even loathing.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Throughout her life she has been a finite store of food, cut into increasingly finer rations. Why, then, does the choice to don wife feel as if it has been the gaining of some new kind of identity, a new type of ownership of being and body - why does it feel not like every other loss, but like a growing, like a becoming. She has taken for herself not simply a love but with it a greater, wilder existence. She has long been hungry and for the first time her mouth is full enough that her body need not slowly digest itself but instead eat, gluttonously, blissfully, of the world.

    Summary

“I have something for you, sir.” Jopson set a little crock in Edward’s hand, clay cold against his palm, the ghost of life from Jopson’s fingertips trailing behind.

“Would you like to try it?” Jopson said, and set the lid aside, dipped his finger into jam bright as new blood. Edward stood still and breathless, hands clenched tight, as Jopson brought that finger up to his mouth.
