    Summary

When he came to, the bus was on the freeway. The windows were dewed with drops of melted snow that shone with captured light. Outside, traffic was at a standstill. Dingy slush covered the roads, gradually accumulating as snow drifted down from the woolen sky, the flakes picked out in sharp contrast where they plunged into the light of streetlamps and headlights. Wei WuXian laughed softly to see it. When he turned away from the window, he saw that the beautiful man from earlier was still sitting next to him, watching him with an expression that might, optimistically, be called inquisitive.

“The snow,” Wei WuXian said, gesturing outside. “It looks like champagne bubbles, only going the wrong way.” He laughed again, and rubbed his head. “Have you ever felt drunk, but been pretty sure you weren't drinking? Haha, no, never mind me. I'm just tired.” He rubbed a hand over his face, wanting desperately to sleep.

    Summary

It starts like this: an absence, inescapable and consuming, that grows like weeds in Kaoru’s stomach and creeps into the hollows between his ribs, taking up space where his lungs should be.

It goes like this: eight years later, he gets a second chance. A chance encounter with Yurika in the hospital Kaoru works at, a man in the far left of a photograph who looks a great deal like someone they both once knew, and then he’s off on a train chasing the heels of a tune that feels like it’s from both another lifetime and just yesterday.

Regrets were always Dazai's thing. Chuuya strives forward, doesn't look back, doesn't let the past catch up to him any more than he lets Corruption's bruises halt his momentum. It doesn't have to change just because he teamed up with Dazai once again. (It does.)

    Summary

    The boy was scared.

This was nothing new. The boy cannot remember the last time he slept soundly without fear; the last time he felt love and affection; the last time he smelt clean air or felt the sun on his face.

But this...this was a different kind of fear. The kind of fear that had the boy's blood running cold. The kind of fear that had his breath wheezing from his lungs in panicked pants.

This was fear for his life.

His legs are aching, they feel like they are about to collapse with exertion and yet he pushes on, willing himself to be faster as he flees through the dirty alleyways, zig-zagging this way and that with no comprehension of where he's going. This city is entirely new to him and he is flying blind.

The footsteps behind him are drawing ever closer. The boy doesn't dare to look behind him, for fear of what he knows is looming in the darkness: the large hulking shapes, the glint of sharpened steel, the putrid scent of death.

    Summary

Back then, when he’d been shaken from sleep during his reflective punishment and told, ‘The Yiling Patriarch is dead!’ To be suddenly awake and alive in a world that no longer held Wei Wuxian— no pain had ever come close or ever will. Even screaming his throat raw, even plucking the strings of his guqin down to the bone, even holding a brand too close to the fire before burning its design into his own skin— nothing, nothing, nothing to the fracturing of his heart.

And more than just loss, it had been regret.

“Back then, back then,” Wei Wuxian echoes in a sigh, the sound of it cutting through the memory. “Be here with me instead, Lan Zhan.” It isn’t dismissive but instead kindly coaxing, a guiding path to the present they now share. Here is Wei Wuxian, bright eyes and curling corners of a smile and heart open wide. Here is Lan Wangji, gathering it all to him, holding it as close as he always wished he could with a selfishness learned in loneliness. Here are the both of them, falling to the bed in a knot of limbs that only gets more tangled when someone tries to pull them apart. Here are the both of them, laid bare both in body and in love. Each can see everything of the other now, not a shadow in sight.
