Besides, I wanted to give Rebekah another lesson in numbers. And now that he had suggested it, I wanted to teach her alef-beit, too. Perhaps I would paint her first page of letters with honey, to teach her that learning what she does not yet know is sweet.

Here's what this story brings out for me, enriching and building on themes from canon:

    • Young women discovering the confidence of their own power
    • Young women discovering that it's right and good that their men value and respect them (and in this story, connecting that to the respect of the woman of valor in Judaism)
    • How there's no inconsistency between intermarriage (Miryem) or conversion (Rebekah) and passionately committed Jewishness, both religious and cultural
    • How the forms of Judaism change based on context, like the challah in this new land of the Diaspora
    • The nature of work!
    • The joy of learning and teaching
    • The kicker. Oh, the beautiful kicker.

In a minute, Shprintze thinks, the fiddler will say what every other neighbor has said: oy, what a trip! Are you sure you’ll be safe? Oh, well, but you’ll see your sister, and that meshuggeneh radical of hers, and maybe if you’ve the time you could bring a letter to my cousin, who lives in the Pod'iacheskii neighborhood –

In fact what the fiddler says is: “Since you’re going, I’m thinking I might come with you.”

Heartbreaking, to think of how sure they were at the time that this was the revolution that would change everything, that would end hate and anti-semitism, that would feed and clothe everyone. Great character voices: True to real people of the environment, true to characterization that feels honest both to prose and musical interpretations, with the magical/real touch of the fiddler just spot on.

Amy had this thing where she did stuff that normally would’ve annoyed the hell out of Rosa, except it didn’t annoy Rosa at all. Which was confusing. Also, annoying.

She was only here for a long weekend, using this convention as an excuse to see Alice for the first time in over a year, or using Alice as an excuse to get away for a convention, or using both as a reason to finally take a vacation, because it was about damn time.

At least, that was the original plan.
