    Summary

"Kate was well-known as one of the best xenolinguistics in the sector. She had studied dozens of alien languages in her long career, and was renowned for helping to decode one of the ancient languages of Andoria.

Now her task for the next six months was simply to work out how to communicate with a single Tamarian cadet - the first ever to join Starfleet - and get him ready to go to the Academy.

It wasn’t going to be easy."

Rahul frowned. “That’s not going to help him much on a starship full of people from all over the quadrant, is it? Or even at the Academy in San Francisco. He’ll be all, I don’t know, Oliver, his bowl outstretched when he wants seconds at dinner, and they won’t have the foggiest what he’s on about.”

“But don’t you see,” Kate said, “that’s how we speak as well? Oliver, his bowl outstretched isn’t that far from Please sir, may I have some more? And if he says that, maybe they’ll recognise the reference. Everyone has misunderstood the Tamarians because they think they have to make things simpler for them. But that’s worse. Remember what you were saying a while ago about pointing and grunting? Our usual way of trying to teach a language, basics first, it’s just like grunting more slowly. We have to make it more complicated.”

“I still don’t see how telling him human fairy tales or whatever gets him any closer to Federation Standard.”

“I have to start somewhere,” Kate said. “And I have a plan for where we can take it next. Now, Jesus at the wedding at Cana?”

    “Excuse me?” Rahul spluttered.

    “More wine?”

He catches Ripley’s hand in mid-arc. It’s shaking, more with anger, he realizes, than fear. He brings her cigarette to his own mouth for a drag, and she lets him. They’re connected now.

    Summary

No one dies, but it is close for some of them. Roy’s — not enjoying this, it’s a joke, it’s a pity job for a washed-up wanker. But it’s satisfying, it is, to see Isaac rally the team behind his bulk, to yell at O’Brien not to wimp out on his torn butt, to hear Richard swear in French while Roy taps his good foot waiting for another lap. Sam smiles wide the first time he passes where Roy’s standing, and Roy makes him do the drill again. “Don’t grin at me,” he shouts in his old captain voice, “fucking run!”
