Steve’s lips quirk up a bit. “Though, I did only ask her for a dance lesson.”
“Those aren’t particularly romantic, Stevie,” is what Bucky says. What Bucky thinks is they’re still touching, and this was a dance lesson, and nothing Steve is saying is snuffing out a single shred of the longing in him.
“Aren’t they?” Steve murmurs under his breath and Bucky shouldn’t be able to hear it, even this close, but he does. He does, and runs hot in half-a-heartbeat.
In which Bucky Barnes gets home from the war in time for the holidays alongside the man he loves (even if that gorgeous punk doesn’t know it yet); swipes a neon-blue vial from a millionaire’s lab; gives a dance lesson; and learns how much more his life can be with the right partner.

glintwein, глинтвейн (n): mulled wine, drank copiously while the snow falls.
James Barnes is planning to ask Steve Rogers to marry him, and it’s not going to work.
It’s not going to work, because Steve Rogers is going to ask him first.
Phil may not be a Black-Widow level spy, but even he can read the signs.

A few years out of the ice, now, and Steve’s adjusting to the modern world. He likes Thai food. He hates discrimination and inequality and also the subway at rush hour. He’s learned to live his life, generally, and is fairly content with what he expects tomorrow will bring.
He does not, by any means, expect James Buchanan Barnes.
Because James Buchanan Barnes is an Army Major sitting in Tony’s lab for a fitting of a Stark prosthetics prototype, and he is the most beautiful man, no: the most beautiful human being Steve has ever seen. And suddenly, Steve has to square with falling in love, hard and fast and all-consuming, with a person who fits into Steve’s life, who curls around Steve’s soul like he was made for it, and who might break Steve’s heart without ever meaning to, just because he’s a normal, precious, mortal man—and the serum quite likely made Steve something else.
Or: Steve Rogers never thought he’d live past 25. Now, he has to make peace with quite possibly living a hell of a lot longer, and losing the love of his life in the process.

It's not a dare, precisely. But it's Tony saying it—talking about finally putting that serum to good use—and there's enough of a taunt in it that they can't just ignore it.
Not that they'd want to ignore it. Not in the least.

His mistake, in making the last jump, is probably a lack of conviction. Lack of decision, of certainty. He knows at least the outline of the consequences—clip all the branches—and he’d promised, or else, implied he’d uphold the gravity of the thing. The significance.
He never said he wouldn’t make new branches. He never said.
He’s not sure if he knew he was lying, at the time. He’s not sure if lying by omission counts, if he believes that it counts, and if he does, he’s not sure if that’s new. For him. He doesn’t know what he was expecting, either; isn’t absolutely sure what he was aiming for. Just that this?
This isn’t it at all.
“You’re a long way from home, aren’t you?”
Steve spins on his heel, weight immediately poised for a fight. But then he realizes the voice came from the ground, where a man sits, an unnatural shade of violet pooled around him, with the whittled core of an apple in his hand.
Or: Steve Rogers' final leap through time runs afoul of the very end of exactly that—time. Pesky thing that it is.

Sleep from my soul began retreating,
And here you once again appear
Before me like a vision fleeting,
A beauty's angel pure and clear.
In ecstasy the heart is beating,
Old joys for it anew revive;
Inspired and God-filled, it is greeting
The fire, and tears, and love alive.

The greatest case Sherlock Holmes ever solved is, and always will be, the discovery of his own oft-doubted heart: a heart held safe, kept warm, nestled close inside John Watson's chest.
