    Summary

“Because some audiences are a bit more...discerning than your average tavern crowd,” Jaskier replies to Geralt’s blurted question calmly, pinching his cheeks and examining himself critically in the vanity mirror. He frowns lightly and dabs a dot of rouge onto each cheek, then delicately taps with his pinky until his cheeks give the subtle illusion of a maiden’s blush.

Geralt just sits and watches from his seat on the edge of the bed, his whetstone indefinitely paused halfway along his steel blade. He clears his throat and tries to tear his eyes away. He fails.

    ~*~

Jaskier has been hired to play at a special kind of party, and Geralt accompanies him as his bodyguard. The temptation to give in to Jaskier's overtures proves too strong to be ignored.

    Summary

Slowly, Jaskier crouches down, mimicking Geralt's position.

"If you find yourself alone with him when his mind gets confused-" Vesemir told him months back. It was toward the beginning of their journey back from Sudduth. "-don't hover over him. Instead, make yourself small and stay calm. No quick movements, and don't stare him down. Just give him space and time to clear his head."

Right. Small and calm. He can do that. The former better so than the latter, but-

This is probably a stupid idea. He should get out and get someone else. This is Geralt, after all. Despite the scars the last ten years left on him, he still could easily kill him. Jaskier is no fighter, and he certainly is no witcher.

Geralt's eyes are fixed on Jaskier, keeping track of his every move. They are wide and angry. But below the anger, there is something else.

    Fear. Terror.

And the thought that Geralt could be afraid of him of all people still has lost nothing of its absurdity to Jaskier. Of him, of all people. Of a silly, little bard.

    … of his friend.

"It's okay," Jaskier says, voice quiet. "You're okay. You just had a nightmare."

You should run from me, he thinks. One day I will do something that you can’t forgive, and it’s going to kill us both.

“We should have gone to the ocean,” Jaskier says.

    Summary

Part of Geralt’s core rails at the very thought of needing anyone, because that’s not how things are supposed to be, but it makes the matter no less true.

He needs Jaskier. Not for his music or his social skills or, gods forbid, any sort of fighting aptitude. No, he needs him because Jaskier just...is. And it seems that Geralt can no more stop himself from needing Jaskier than he can stop the sun from rising. (He knows. He’s tried to quash the feeling time and again. He always fails.)

Which brings him back to the present moment. Watching Jaskier play and...and wanting.

The question is, should he let Jaskier know?

And Geralt wonders. And thinks. About whys and hows and maybes.

    Maybe.

    Summary

Despite Jaskier's hard work, there are still plenty of people who hate witchers. They think they're monstrous, inhuman, only held back from violence by a thin veneer of control. One mage has a plan to spread his views by capturing a witcher and bewitching them to remove their control. When the Butcher of Blaviken walks into his hideout, he's convinced he's found the perfect candidate - and a convenient way to get rid of the pesky bard that's been singing his praises.

Jaskier is forced to agree witchers are not human, but that doesn't mean they're dangerous. In fact, he's astounded by how many of Geralt's uncontrolled impulses involve touching.
