Summary
“It’s a wonderful Faerûn custom, and extremely important in our realm.”
“I’ve never heard of it,” Shadowheart said lightly.
“Shadowheart doesn’t remember a lot of things,” Evie said to Lae’zel. “It’s tragic, really. But birthday kisses are practically sacred, especially to half-elves.”
“I’m a half-elf,” Shadowheart chimed in.
“So much of her mind is missing. Doesn’t it break your heart?”

Summary
“You should have just said something, I’m an actor too.”
“Ah!” Gale said excitedly, some of his nerves dissolving. Knowing they had something in common made her seem more like a human instead of a visitor from an extremely chic planet of extraterrestrials. “A fellow thespian, a treader of the boards.”
Emboldened, Gale held his hand out to her and Window Seat’s hand was soft and warm when she took it.
“I’m Gale. Gale Dekarios.”
“Treader of the boards,” she repeated, shaking her head but still amused. “I feel like I know everything about you now.”

Summary
“Shadowheart,” Evie said softly outside her tent. “Are you still awake? If you’re not, you have to get up anyway because I’m here.”
“I’m up.” Shadowheart opened the tent flap and let Evie enter. “Is this a wine conversation?”
“Definitely.”
____Evie can always tell Shadowheart anything.

Summary
“Do you trust me?” Evie asked. Her eyes, like warm honey, stared at him intently.
This was the natural stopping point. The point where it was obvious Gale had forgotten that he was supposed to be the responsible one, the one to keep them both out of trouble. Staring at the soft curves of Evie’s body, her hand under his shirt - those were amusing, one-off accidents. Now was the perfect time for Gale to gently guide Evie’s hand away and tell her she should try to get some sleep.
“I trust you,” Gale said hoarsely.
Well, he tried.

Summary
Evie looked out over the city again. “Baldur's Gate is a wonderful place.”
Gale marveled at how he had once found Evie difficult to read. Every arch of her brow and tilt of her mouth seemed to say so much to him now. He noticed the tightness in her smile, how quickly she broke eye contact with him. Even the tone of her voice rang false.
“Now why do I get the sense that you’re finding this all a bit below ‘wonderful’?” he asked.
She pouted. “I don’t like this - this thing you do now. Where you know what I’m thinking all the time."

Summary
Thanatos looks away, down at the empty bottle in his hand, the indulgence still on the tip of his tongue, so fleeting. “Nectar today, fish tomorrow.”
Zagreus laughs. “What? What does that mean?”
“It means, you’re under Dionysus’s influence today. Promising me nectar. And tomorrow, it’ll be Poseidon. Promising me whatever he can provide.”
Zagreus leans back, squinting one eye, as if trying to keep him in focus. “Weird thing to say,” he says. “I’m only ever myself, Olympic boon or no.”

Summary
She tilts her head to look at him. He’s rarely met anyone so guarded, but from what he can read of her now, she seems simply curious. Perhaps appraising would be more accurate. “Were you praying?” she asks.
“No, not praying.” He’d prayed frequently in his youth, but prayer had become rather complicated conceptually once he knew his goddess personally, even before… everything else that had happened. “I was practicing an incantation.”
The look she gives him is knowing, but almost gentle. Almost. “There’s more to it than that,” she says. “I know devotion when I see it.”
Gale offers to show Shadowheart the Weave. Neither of them knows what to make of the lesson.
