It was prophesied 300 years ago that Erik Lehnsherr would be killed by an Englishman. So upon receiving a letter from an eager young Professor of Oxford, who wishes to visit Erik's estate for research purposes, the only logical course of action is to invite him there as a guest.

    Summary

Six months, no yellow cape, and one and a half thankfully harmless gun accidents after, Harold and Nathan had settled into a routine. The Machine would send them a number, and Harold would try his damnedest to resolve it through a computer. Usually, this endeavour would end in failure, because despite the advent of technology, the idiocy of certain members of humanity was so fundamental that not even computers could provide any sort of real solution.

This meant that Nathan often had to intervene. Sometimes they hired help: which had worked out with varying degrees of disaster. Sometimes they tipped off the police. Sometimes Nathan and Harold ventured out, bickering all the time, and the success rate of this latter tactic was usually at around 24%. It also usually served to further erode Harold’s already falling opinion of humanity.

You've read this story before, but you know want to read it again.

One half of pairing is a shapeshifter. Other half adopts the shifted, then later finds out that the animal is actually also a person. Sex ensues.

    See?

You've read it before, but that's not going to stop you from reading it again, is it? ;)

"I don't feel the need to put my tailor and shoemaker out of business in order to demonstrate my recognition of the danger the world is presently facing, Mr. Reese, nor have I considered it appropriate to drink myself to death and save the kaiju the trouble. If that's really the best thing you can imagine doing, I'll leave you to it; if on the other hand you'd be interested in contributing more productively to the defense effort, I can offer you a chance to do so."

    Huh.

I mean, my headcanon has always been that it was Tony (Stark) who was the one who initiated the Jaeger program, but astolat makes a very good case for Harold having been the originator, instead.

(I mean, Tony would look at the Kaiju and go "imma go fight that thing with an oversized IM suit", whereas Harold made it human-shaped so it was easier to learn and control--both excellent explanations imo.)

Something about this--perhaps the undestatedness--isn't doing it for me, and I wish I knew why.

I admit, I have a soft spot for Amy Acker, even when she's playing "evil"--but I don't think Root is evil (and I don't think the show thought she was evil either).

It's a bit like reading fic from before HBP/DH and hearing about how evil Snape is, or alive Dumbledore--true based on the evidence you had at the time, no longer quite accurate.

As to this fic, it's a similar premis to astolat's in which Leila is threatened by Root and the boys take her away to a house in the country. In both stories, the boys bait Root ("faulty" security) in both, they have to settle in for the long haul (although the long haul in this one is not as long as astolat's). In this one, tho, there's no kid, just Bear.

There's a bit of fake relationship in here, too, but the Rinch is sidelined in favor of baiting and defeating Root.

Good, but idk if I'd re-read.
