    Summary

“It’s what I’ve wanted this whole time, right? Someone who loves me?”

“You do,” Eddie says, the words tumbling out of his mouth like he hadn’t quite meant to say them. But when Buck turns his head towards him sharply, he finds Eddie meeting his gaze steadily.

“You do have people who love you,” he continues, and there’s the barest tremble to his voice that Buck knows no one else would notice. “And you have—you have a family. You don’t have to settle, Buck.”

Or: On Christmas Eve, Buck gets his forever.

    Summary

Most of the time he’s fine, most of the time it doesn’t really bother him, especially since he’s been able to ignore it most of his life. But becoming a first responder meant there was a little more interaction with those on the brink of death and those who succumb to it. It was harder to ignore when he was trying to save the people in the first place.

But he’s not good at this part, the moving on part. Maddie was the one who got the guidance from Grandma, who’d gotten the ‘special education’. Evan, meanwhile, had made the snap judgement to try and get some measure of approval from their mother and declared that he had no idea what they were talking about.

    Not that it worked.

It was fine until Devon. Devon who Buck almost saved, Devon who was frozen in terror, Devon who had taken to haunting Buck.

    ---
Buck & Maddie can see spirits; not that Buck ever told anyone he could. As he settles more into firefighting, Buck's quickly realising that ignoring them isn't going to work anymore.

Maybe he should've gotten the basics from Grandma after all; then again, he's always been good at winging it.

    Summary

    Buck—Buck is knitting.

Eddie blinks, rubs his eyes. Yeah, Buck is knitting: thick fingers a little clumsy as Bobby shows him how to purl stitch with a soft-looking ball of pink ombre wool. “You’re knitting,” Eddie says, flummoxed, because Buck’s hands look huge and ridiculous on the needles, but the way he’s holding them so carefully, the pink tip of his tongue pursed between his lips as he concentrates, is making Eddie feel—well, something. He’s not sure what. And then Buck pulls the stitch from one needle to the other, looks up to meet Eddie’s eyes with an embarrassed smile, and, yeah, okay. He knows what he’s feeling.

    Summary

It’s luck, more than anything, that sees Buck stumbling out of the building mere seconds before it gives one final shudder and caves in on itself. His oxygen is almost out, his mask is cracked from a piece of falling debris, and there’s a cut on his forehead that’s dripping blood down his face.

None of that seems to matter when Eddie crashes into him so forcefully that he almost knocks Buck off his feet.

(Or, five times Eddie tells Buck he loves him, and the one time he says it with words.)

    Summary

The minutes pass, and the rain falls with a scattered tapping on the ground. He couldn’t even remember the last time he had seen it rain like this in LA, quiet and calming, leaving a nice undisturbed haze across the city skies. He wants to bask in it, even for a moment. Well...maybe not in the rain. Buck’s more than okay watching it afar from the awning in Eddie’s backyard.

He knows he should head back, and eventually, he will.

Just a little longer, Buck tells himself.

    ====

A rainy day. Two cups of hot chocolate. And gentle conversation.
