Mourning is even worse the second time around, he says, and she looks for a split second to the table still overflowing with plans for improved prosthetics. Her eyes are a bit softer, trusting, filling with tears as she nods furiously in an attempt to will them away. We don’t have time for tears, she says wetly, and yet still they come he replies.
The kid, who wore a Captain America shirt and an old ratty backpack covered in rather sophisticated Sharpie art, began to back away, and Jace panicked. It wasn’t his fault that the only person who showed up to the club had nice, soft-looking hair and sparkling eyes and a beautiful voice and roughly the same amount of energy as five kindergarteners on a field trip to the zoo. He couldn’t let him leave.
“I’m him! Um, I’m Jace. Book club... guy.” he said lamely.
“Oh! Good,” the kid replied, smiling, “I’m Simon! I guess it’s just us this time. What’s the plan?”
Simon dumped his bag onto the floor and fell into the plush chair next to Jace, sinking into the overstuffed cushions as if he hung out in the library every day. Maybe he did.

Simon stirred. His head had been resting on the window and Alec had honestly thought that the poor kid had passed out already.
“Magnus yes,” he mumbled.
“Simon, here. They should, like, cancel out, right?”
Simon looked blearily at the 5-Hour Energy, shrugged, and removed the cap.
“Sounds good to me,” he said, and tossed it back.
“Oh my god, Magnus, you’re going to kill him.”

In the doorway stood a tall figure hunched over, looking down, in a black t-shirt and jeans, holding a duffel bag and a backpack.
“Alec?” Luke asked, “I didn’t know you were coming over tonight.”
Alec looked up, and Luke understood. His eyes and nose were red, and he was shaking. He was blinking rapidly, and he tried to clear his throat and speak.
“I, um, th- th- the, mom, I, I she-” Alec’s chest was heaving, and he couldn’t get a word out besides mom, and Luke didn’t need to know any more.
