With a mostly empty upper chain-of-command after Khan, Starfleet halts outgoing advanced missions, postponing the five-year mission until further notice. Spock alternates primarily between teaching at the Academy, training potential graduates in the field as a science officer, and visiting James Kirk during his rehabilitation. After a small altercation on a training trip, Spock returns to his duties unaffected, outside of visions of the same aged, grey-haired Human man who treats him with unfamiliar familiarity. -
