Summary
Don was waiting for what John and Maureen had just said to rearrange itself into something that only sounded like they were hitting on him. That was something that happened occasionally, for reasons that had absolutely nothing to do with wishful thinking, although admittedly Maureen and John were both prime wish material, theoretically speaking.

"Do you ever wonder," Lenny asked in a drowsy, half-dreaming voice, "what it would be like to have a life that wasn't completely fucked up?"
"I already know," Midge said, at the same time that Susie said, "Why the fuck would I wonder something like that?"

Tharkay makes it to Peking intact with the news of Napoleon’s imminent invasion of Russia. Which would be all well and good, except that Laurence isn’t very intact himself.

Summary
Ravus hears whispers as he shucks his field jacket. He tries not to pay them any mind but he suspects that he’s intended to overhear at least some of the remarks. Soft, and how’s he supposed to be in charge, and oughta be whipped - only that last really throws him. The rest he’s had said to his face before, but that’s new. He’s heard tell that the Army uses corporal punishment on its lower ranks, sometimes, but no one has ever dared to try it with him.

Summary
This is the backstory for Martha Wells' one-off novel City of Bones.
On the trade road from Kenniliar to Charisat, Sagai's caravan is beset by pirates, and he is captured. A lone krismen, Khat, rescues him. Several years later they are the co-stars of the novel, but this is the story she sketches out, of the prequel."Sagai shook his head, smiling faintly at the memory. 'We did not have an easy time together. It was two days before Khat stopped pretending he couldn’t speak any recognizable language. He was willing to risk his life to free me simply because I was a prisoner of the pirate band he had chosen to harry, but he wanted nothing to do with me once I was liberated, and he wanted my help least of all. I think almost that he would have been perfectly happy to bleed to death in the Waste if only he could have done it in private, without an ignorant city dweller pestering him.'"

Bookmarker's Notes
Full of creepy crawly desert creatures, cannibalism, and the overwhelming horror of someone who actually seems to want to help. I really do love Khat so much.
