It's a conventional story. The evil stepmother wants the throne. She's already got the king enchanted, so now she just has to get rid of the princess. So just transform her into a swan and leave her to drift around a lake until she can be rescued by true love.
The only issue is that this princess isn't conventional. And swans can wreak havoc when they want to.
