Jonathan Sims, six months after the Unknowing, wakes to find himself without a daemon - without humanity, without a soul. It's a cursed half-life, but existence as a shell without a heart isn't so bad: between solving the mystery of a persistent illusion cast over his friends and some light pseudo-cannibalism, a life as a monster is better than no life at all.
