Summary
Annabeth doesn’t attend Percy’s funeral. Not his demigod nor his mortal one. They burn a shroud for him with Sally present, and Annabeth knows because Chiron had wanted her to attend, but Annabeth can’t quite bring herself to come face to face with the mother of a boy she still loves and whose death she carries. Instead Annabeth heads to the beach, liquor bottle in hand.
“Why’d you do it?” she asks Luke.
Tears cascade past Luke’s cheeks as he turns to her. He stands slowly, legs carrying him before her. His hands cradle her cheeks, the palms rough with callouses so familiar Annabeth struggles to breathe. These were the hands that practically raised her. The hands she held when Luke, and ultimately a part of her, died.
“We,” Luke whispers, “weren’t made to suffer.”
A sobs escapes past her lips, a whine following in its wake. How can Luke say that, when Annabeth’s whole life had been made up of suffering?
“There is more to life than the gods and Olympus.” Luke wipes the tears from her cheeks. He shifts closer, breath ghosting on the crown of her head as he says, “but you’ll never be able to live while they’re alive.”

Summary
Annabeth thinks everything must have started in the back of a smelly trailer sharing a pack of oreo cookies. It marked the beginning of a bond, a simple alliance that had forged into much more. It was a choice. A rebellion against her own mother and the gods. Had it been the start? Could it all be so simple?
Percy thinks it all started that day in the creek. A shining symbol had flashed above his head. It had been his father claiming him. It had been a desperate attempt. Chiron and the other campers had bowed. They knelt before a twelve year old not yet conscious of the power in his hand, and Percy thinks maybe this is where it all starts. At the edges of the creek, water lapping at his feet, and grey eyes he can’t stop staring at.

Summary
Percy and Annabeth have fallen, and it seems like Tartarus does not want to let them go. Hesiod, and old Greek poet, had speculated it would take nine days to fall into Tartarus but the truth is different. The Greeks invented tragedy and yet Annabeth had never believed it would end like this. She had done too much, had survived too much, for it to end like this, but maybe that was the point. Maybe all she had done didn’t matter.
In the pit, it doesn't matter who you are because this is the land without gods, and survival was just a pretty word to make you feel better about the decisions you have to take. There's something dark growing inside them, and the longer they stay in Tartarus, the more Annabeth realizes maybe they shouldn't leave.Part 2

Summary
They left Tartarus and are now back at Camp Half-Blood, but then why does it feel so wrong?
Percy Jackson can't let go. He finds himself split between the Percy from before and the one that survived the pit. He doesn't want to be him. He just wants to forget. He wants to go back to a time where his biggest problem was getting kicked out of school and not the mess he is today. He can feel it. The lullaby that sings inside his blood. It tempts him into a dance he knows he cannot follow, and he lets go.
Annabeth is in a race against time herself. She had seen things in Tartarus. Things no demigod should have seen and yet she had. She has the pieces to a puzzle only she can solve and yet the image is fracted and blurred from view. She needs to solve it. Needs to beat it, because losing means death. There are broken images inside Annabeth's mind, and the realization that maybe she and Percy shouldn't have survived Tartarus after all.

Summary
Demigods will never be the gods just like the gods will never be the Titans, and the Titans their predecessors. It makes sense in practice but demigods keep dying and the gods simply take advantage. They say the Greeks invented tragedy but people weren't made to suffer.
Annabeth and Percy have been to Tartarus, they have survived seventeen years under the gods' rule and now they must decide. Luke had also been their age when he finally turned, and everyone knew demigods never lived long.
