Eddie runs into Taylor Kelly in a bar and learns a surprising new fact about his best friend.

She flips, catches and says with studied casualness, "So, Eddie. Did Buck ever tell you he was in love with you?"

"No, he- What? What are you talking about?"

    "Not your turn."

    "Taylor."

Taylor puts the beer mats down on the bar, lining them up perfectly. She looks back up at Eddie. "You really didn't know, huh?"

"Though—and I know you probably don't want to talk about it, but since you and Natalia are over with now, I've been wondering…" Maddie pauses, watches Buck make a face like he's bracing to be smacked. "What happened with Eddie?"

Buck stops wincing and just blinks at her for a second. Then he says, "What?"

"You two were dancing around it for so long, and then… what, it just didn't work out? Was the date really that bad?"

She's expecting another wince, or even for him to duck out of the conversation entirely, but instead Buck is staring at her like she's grown a second head. "Maddie. I've never been on a date with Eddie."

    -

Or: the poker game was a date. It takes Buck a while to catch on, though.

"Buck. It's been almost two weeks since I've been able to get my hands on you. I'm going out of my mind. Yeah, I want you to tell me how you thought about bending me over the weight bench when I critiqued your gym selfies, or whatever."

Or: while Eddie is out of town, he and Buck revisit an old fantasy of Buck's.

    Summary

The dying light catches the hair on Buck’s stomach, glinting where it smatters across the firm, broad planes of his belly—Eddie resolutely does not pay heed to his monkey brain’s kneejerk response of bite—crowding thick and snaking down into the waistband of his shorts. Eddie’s not going to pass out, he’s going to die.

“Eds,” Buck grins, catching sight of him. “Ready to get your ass handed to you?” He scoops up the basketball resting on the bench, letting it twirl effortlessly on a fingertip. Eddie is not going to pass out or die, God doesn’t love him enough for either of those things, Eddie is going to chub into the world’s least concealable boner in these baggy-ass shorts that won’t hide shit and then he’s going to have to ask Chim’s friends to mercy-kill him.

or, buck's good at basketball, eddie's trying really hard not to commit an act of public indecency about it, and maybe, just maybe, a slightly bloody beachside pick-up game can be the start of something new

“It’s always pretty fun to see a former fuckboy from your grad school era bootycall list all domestic and settled down.”

“Right, uh,” Buck’s brain is very quickly piecing together the slow onceovers, no doubt cataloguing the matching sleep-soft sweatpants and cozy hoodies and unbrushed hair at breakfast-time on a weekday. The singular witnessed conversation regarding co-purchased home cleaning products. The lack of personal space followed by the hasty exit when made to interact with an ex of sorts. “He’s, uh, he’s actually my best friend.”

“Hey man, I love that for you. That’s the best way to do it, you know? Wish everyone got that in their relationship.” She's smiling very warmly at him. Buck’s sweating again.

“He’s my partner,” Buck stresses, as much emphasis on the word ‘partner’ as he can manage.

or, two boy best friends and an ex lover walk into a grocery store. everyone is on their normalest behaviour.
